I am not quit sure the meaning of explanation, so I couldn't figure out why the answer is E.
Can someone explain to me?

Together (1) and (2) only yield the total number of
the single-famikly homes that were occupied.
Neither statement offers the needed information as
to how many of the single-family homes built last
year were indeed occupied at the end of last year.

Of the 230 <--- 為什麼要用the(限定修飾)來表示?

因為小弟一開始誤認230是一種型號

英文程度不好...請勿見怪
