(A)看起來文法沒啥不對,(除了for centuries 夾在 has.....been中間,不知可不可以),因此會不會是句意的問題,to become.....和becoming,看起來並沒有很明顯的衝突說

基本上V-ing &V-ed(分詞) 的用法與to V(不定詞)還是不一樣

分詞在作為形容詞用時可以變換位子

不定詞只有在作為副詞時可以移動位子

而且在意思上都是in order to 的簡略

這裡應該是要做形容詞用,所以至少該改成: , becoming...
但是仍會有ambiguous的問題，你會不知道他要形容a fungus 還是 the roots of trees
所以答案C的寫法最好
