Pliny (the Elder) 羅馬學者,生於高盧的諾烏姆‧科姆(今科莫)。就學於羅馬後曾在日耳曼服兵役,後定居科莫,致力於研究和寫作。羅馬皇帝尼祿任命他為西班牙的財政官, 西元71年在他姐夫去世後成為姪兒的監護人,並把姪兒收為養子,名小普里尼。他於西元77年編寫了一部37卷的百科全書,稱為《自然史》(Historia Natu ralis)。這是他唯一留傳下來的著作。西元79年,維蘇威火山爆發情況嚴重時, 在斯塔比伊堡登陸觀察,結果被火山煙霧窒息而死。
