覺得是 (D): drunk 修飾 John; downstairs 修飾 took (John 喝醉酒,在樓下接案子) i.e. {John (who was) drunk} {took cases downstairs.}
(A) downstairs 可以修飾 took 或 drunk. i.e. John {took cases downstairs} drunk 或 John took cases {downstairs drunk}
(B) downstairs 可以修飾前面句子 或 drunk. i.e. {John took cases drunk} downstairs 或 John took cases {drunk downstairs}
(C) cases 不會 drunk
(E) downstairs 可以修飾 took 或 drunk. i.e. John drunk {downstairs took cases} 或 John {drunk downstairs} took cases

我也遇到的題目這題了(順序可能記錯了), 如果像樓上那樣, 我可能也會選D
但我印象中took是沒畫線的, 會長的像下面這樣, 所以我選了A
He took the briefcase downstairs drunk
(A) the briefcase downstairs drunk
(B) drunk the briefcase downstairs
(C) downstairs the briefcase drunk
(D) the briefcase drunk downstairs

這裡有幾個點可以討論的
1- downstairs可以是n, adj, adv在這裡挺像adv. 我在A和C中間掙扎了一下,
覺得take是transitive verb, (A)downstairs放後面修飾整個took the briefcase的狀態挺清楚的, 所以我就捨去了(C); (C)還有個讓我覺得ambiguity的地方在downstairs可以形容took, 也可以形容the briefcase

2- drunk看起來過去分詞
如果把drunk往前移變成(B)的樣子, 那drunk又可能會修飾到後面的the briefcase
把drunk放在後面像是說明"程度" , 我在longman找到個句子比較類似的, 但不是挺像的=>But he had been coming home drunk too often and now she was determined to let him know her feeling about it.

這樣答案比較像是 (A) 喔! 不然其中有一題就會找不到答案.

其實 (A) 我並不十分反對,因為口語就是這麼說的.這就是外國人對他們語言的困擾,我們用文法邏輯慢慢推,美國人憑感覺秒殺.反過來看我們講中文哪有什麼文法?
