[問題]OG108

108. Reporting that one of its many problems had been the recent extended sales slump in women's apparel, the seven-store retailer said it would start a three-month liquidation sale in all of its stores.

(A) its many problems had been the recent
(B) its many problems has been the recently
(C) its many problems is the recently
(D) their many problems is the recent
(E) their many problems had been the recent

ans:(A)

我想問的是解釋中的一個觀念

Choice A is best: the singular pronoun its agrees in number with the singular noun referent retailer; the past perfect verb form had been is used appropriately to refer to action com¬pleted prior to the action of the simple past tense said', and the adjective recent correctly modifies the noun phrase extended sales slump. The adverb recently in choices B and C distorts the meaning of the sentence by illogically suggesting that what was recent was only the extension of the slump, and not the slump itself

這段是說:

正確答案用recent(adj.)

來修飾extended sales slump 這個名詞片語

(adj.+n.phase)

extended sales slump 整個是一個n.

但是(B)(C)用recently(adv.)

則變成recently extended sales slump

(adv.+adj.+n.+v.)

把extended sales slump變成一個狀態,也把slump的詞性改變了

請問這樣理解對嗎?

請大家多多指教

謝謝! :smile

在OG這句話裡面 他是說recent變成是修飾the extension of the slump這一個名詞片語 而不是修飾slump這個字 這是一個不合邏輯的suggesting
然而 在原句中 recent(a) extended(a) sales(n)----->都是修飾 slump 意思是說 最近大量的銷售下降
有錯還請各位大大指教

先謝謝您 :smile

可是

(B)(C)

是用recently <adv.>喔!

是說副詞不能修飾名詞片語?

可是OG解釋又沒提到這個

還是不太懂咧.....

能請大家在多多幫忙嗎?

謝謝!

B C的結構是長這樣子的
recently(adv)--->修飾extended(a)----> sales(n)----> slump(n)
名詞是可以修飾名詞的 但例句忘了 好像是什麼假錶的那樣子(fake watch) 莫老以前有講過 不太確定啦 還請大大補充

Choice A is best: (前略).....and the adjective recent correctly modifies the noun phrase extended sales slump.

從此來看,個人覺得recent修飾名詞片語是正確的喔!

不知道M大怎麼看呢?

然後

recent X X slump.....

recent vs. recently
recent: the recent extended sales slump 最近的銷售下跌 所以”最近”形容”’銷售””
recently: the recently extended sales slump recently形容extended

1. the recently ( sth.) slump 的句子結構…這樣文法當然錯,因為前面已有had been為動詞
2. the recently extended (sth) 的結構也正確,且文法ok
但兩種皆有可能情況下就會造成句意的混亂~

所以…OG裡的解釋才會說:
illogically suggesting that what was recent was only the extension of the slump, and not the slump itself

為了避免這樣的表達錯誤…所以用recent來清楚表示後面是個名詞片語 extended sales slump ==> 廣泛的銷售衰落

至於the recent extended sales slump之前的the 仍是無法判斷,因為後面一定都是有名詞(sth)
1. the recently ( sth.) slump
2. the recently extended (sth)
由於兩個句型都有(sth),冠詞是一定會有的

另一個方法是用時態來判斷
said這詞已經告訴我們…作者在說以前的事情了…
較晚的當然用had (過去完成)~
如果還在進行…用say來陳述目前狀況會較妥

以上參考
-------Vision;Passion; Determination; Persistence; Innovation-------
