OG解釋是說
1. in which or when can be used interchangeably in this sentence
2. The verb form here should be the simple past tense existed rather than the past perfect had existed.

我的問題是:
1.when不會比較好嗎? 這兩者是都可以用
還是有什麼情形in which 不能代替when
2.為什麼用過去簡單式? 我第一選直覺就把簡單式劃掉選過去完成式了
句子裡前面的led不是已經是簡單式了?
exist有沒有過去完成式的用法呢??

這邊用in which跟用when都可以
因為這邊有一個age(年代)
S + V + in an(this) age
所以用關代的時候可以改成in which

太模糊了 我舉個例好了
This is the place where I live.
This is the place in which I live.
基本上都可以 (文法上來說)
這跟
This is the age when xxxxx
This is the age in which xxxx
都可以
是一樣的道理

個人淺見
首先"of an age in which"
也就是在那個年代
這句話的意思是
在那個年代冰存在的位置,現在的氣溫已經不一樣了
這個意念裡並沒有 : 直到那個年代為止都是存在
說不定之前的prehistoric那裡是火燄山
所以had done我覺得超過意思, 一開始就沒考慮

when為什麼也可以...
這我是猜的
我想...of an age in which
which 指的就是"an age"
in which=in an age
但是同時也可以用when來借代整個"當時"
因為when整顆就有in an age的意思
類似的東西高中好像有上過

你上面說的in what不等於where. what是和後面句子一起的, 應該看成 existed in (what are now temperate areas)。

既然是PROPOSE一個CONCEPT，這個CONCEPT就只是一個CONCEPT，哪需要用到HAD + PP.(強調過去的過去)。
這提純粹是文法概念，跟修辭無關，除非他要考你IN WHICH 還是WHEN比較好！

請問是因為ambiguity嗎？
因為now可以修飾are temperate跟area???

now是時間副詞,放在are後面是要修飾are

now不可能修飾area(N)

在這裡也不會是修飾temperate(adj)

不好意思,我的想法是這樣,題目如果用的是過去完成式,代表這個冰河存再於過去地"一段時間",這段時間比CONCEPT提出的時間還要早,所以我覺得過去完成式好像也可以?有人可以告訴我這樣想是錯在哪裡嗎?

這題我有不同看法....
基本上in which和when在本題沒有差異...也沒有in which優先選擇的問題
在來
用過去簡單式而不用過去完成式應該和是不是concept無關....
同樣不是文法問題....是句意問題....
研究led to(導致) LA這個人提出某項概念.......
該概念是在導致某人提出後發生....並非在前
所以用簡單式....純粹先後問題....得從句意判斷
