文章FionaV » 2005-12-23 06:56

Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years, excepting for the domains of administration and teaching,
the English language was never really spoken on the island.

A. excepting for
B. except in
C. but except in
D. but excepting for
E. with the exception of

Ans: C

2. 刪E "with the exception of"的用法好像有點wordy

The first part of the sentence, Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years (this implies that English is the spoken language in Mauritius).

But the last part of the sentence states that English was never really spoken on the island. So there needs to be a transition of a contrast between the first and the last.

But except for things like admin and teaching <-- successfully establishes the contrast between the first and the last part of the sentence.

hope that helps.

ans. C "but except in"
but -> conj.
except -> prep.

otherwise, this sentence will have two verbs "was" without any conj.

apart from can be used with either meaning

except is not used to introduce another clause. Use unless or except if, except when, except while, except that
