我猜你的意思是指much是否必要?!
不是必要的,主要是not so...as的句型,中間是否填much或其他形容詞皆可!!
所謂的idiomatic部分是指一般不用not as...as,而改用not so...as!!

因為句意是要<比較>我們人類的智慧和其他靈長類的智慧 的區別

distinction用在<比較>的時候，是要加between 而不是of
distinction between A and B
