所以 答案應是A 不知道這樣對不對呢?!

如果要套 be lacking in 就會寫成: in what was lacking {in his technical skill}
what {was lacking in} his technical skill : 他缺乏演奏技巧(等同說他亂演奏); 如此, what 也不能當主詞, 因為 something {is lacking in} his technical skill 講不通.
所以 lacking 在這裡是 lack 的進行式, 但是很不幸的, lacking 的動作是由 something 來做, 不合邏輯.
如果 lacking 表示持續進行, 那靜態的 made up 可能趕不上速度, 所以這樣好像也講不通.
只得放棄 (A) (C).
what he lacked 表示這個 conductor 對 Baker 的演奏技巧非常了解, 知道 Baker 的缺點在哪裡 (what 必有所代)
whatever 言下之意這個 conductor 對 Baker 的演奏技巧並不了解,不知道Baker 的演奏技巧哪裡不足,但 Baker 的情感彌補了技巧的不足.顯得這個 conductor 不專業,評論隨便湊合,挖東牆補西牆.
