副詞的位置要看作者的想法，擺的地方不同，修飾對象也就不同，就文法來說，基本上擺哪都行

但就是因為副詞位置變動，修飾位置就會不同，因此句意也會跟著變動

原題A，副詞so screatly是修飾 installed and operated，至於你更動之後，則是修飾整句

用中文理解當然是差不多，但以嚴謹的英文來說，還是有差別的

我的看法是還是得加that 吧，唸起來(我純粹是用感覺)如果只有so卻沒有that ，是很怪的

From my understaning of the OG's explanation of E, I think ETS is trying to tell us that the entire meaning of this sentence was split because "installed and operated so secretly" was put in the front of the sentence rather than taking "a recording system" as a subject like A does. Take a look at the un-underlyed sentence fragment, notice that the "that-clause (that even Theodore....)" clearly is to modify a recording system because it appears right after it. By such sentence struture, the sentence can be returned to be: A recording system that even a Theodore C.....did not know it existed, was installed and operated so secretly. Thus, the cause & effect that the struture "so.. that" would offer is diminished. That explains why ETS say the subject and the predicate can not logically connected to the remainder of the sentence.
