X as well as Y
= X and Y

=a critique of all chemistry since Robert Boyle and a vision of a new chemistry that Davy hoped to found.

我覺得這題的 "a vision of new chemistry"指代有問題...who's vision of new chemistry?? Robert or Davy.

我選(B) 不太會解釋為啥..感覺(A)不順

我的感覺上a中的 x as well as y
x= a critique
y=a vision

我覺得同類呀...

至於你說的vision指代問題...我覺得因為前面的critique已經是Davy的那本書了..
所以後面的vision也是Davy的...

兩者有何不同?

since+S+V

[from the time or event you are mentioning until now or until a speicified later time]

since Robert [sentence structure 有問題?]

following Robert Boyle

participle phrase modifies a critique 說在Robert之後的a critique of all chemistry

我做題時也覺得since這邊怪怪的
可是沒細想

加上搞不懂vision跟envisioning差在哪

於是就亂選了...:P

不過這樣表示...since在這邊的用法是錯的囉?

另外再問...這邊的as well as 跟 and also 應該是都沒錯的吧?

是啊 a兄我兩討論當然是記得的

但是總感覺還有一點疑惑
197這邊是因為句意而產生的不同
因為基本上and 跟as well as意思是相同的吧...

而我所想問的是as well as與and在本質上是否有所不同

我的感覺是as well as似乎不像and的感覺那麼強烈,但我也說不清楚

但是何時要用哪一個我還是不會分...

1. 我絕得A最大的問題是since (詳請看金剛妹那樓)

因為擺了since ,會誤解句意為 "Robert Boyle / a vision 同類"

2. as well as 跟and 的關係有沒又等同 , 真的無法如此武斷的區分
還是必須看題目的不同,才能做更進一步的區別

如本題 "and" 可以簡單的解釋為 "+" ex. Yor and I are good students
但是,要說這個"and"有因果的味道也是OK的
因為 follow 的是 Boyle 所發現的以及他所希望發現但還沒發現希望後人(或他自己) 能夠發現的new chemistry

3. 寫作時何時要用as well as 何時要用and 不會沒關係

只要觀察出題目的考點是要考你用and 還是 as well as 就好啦

這一題GMAT Club跟TestMagic兩個網站裡面的討論到目前為止的結論是選A

綜合上面兩個網站跟我的想法，B有下面幾個問題:

1. and also=also (redundant)

上面紅色的his可以指Davy也可以指Boyle (ambiguaty)
(顯然不是指Boyle因為後面接Davy的希望)

3. follow在句意上比較像是"追隨"，跟其他選項中的時間副詞表達從Robert Boyle之後好像有一點不太一樣
