以選項 (C) 的角度來看,這個次要結構希望用的是'動詞',所以由出題者的觀點 as 必需作連接詞,才足以撐起這個次要結構.既然是連接詞,後面就要有動詞,因此 as 在 (B) (D) 的用法並不正確.這個說法大約可以從 OG10-Q60 窺見:當需要子句的時候,要以 as 作連接詞來引導.

OG10 也是作類似的解釋:
In B and D, as is incorrect; also, a protection in D has no noun for which it can logically substitute.

對 (D) 加以說明,[即使 as 作介係詞,] a protection 沒有可以替代的名詞.

這題和你說的另一題, as+N都是表"身分", 單獨一個句子,
我覺得as 經常可以省略變成同位語
只是這題, 正如上面很多人討論過的, items of ...無法和a protection 同位

你說的那題是ok的, 那種大自然現象=物理定律的表現

OG 說 a protection 沒有可以替代的名詞,我想是這樣子: shields 是具體名詞, protection 是抽象名詞,邏輯上兩者不能同位 (i.e. 不相等).

method 也是同樣的情形.如 OG 的解釋:
Choices A and B awkwardly use the singular word method to refer to items of military equipment rather than to the use of such items. Also, a method of protecting would be more idiomatic than a method to protect in A or a method protecting in B.

如果是 the use of shields 就可以和 merthod 對等了,因為 use 和 method 都是抽象名詞.

此外, method 不會做 protect 這個動作, 所以用 method of protecting 才合理.不用 method protecting (= method that protects) 是基於相同的原因.
