我認為通常表示"A有一樣東西,就像B的一樣."時，應表示為：

A has a thing, like B's.

不應該表示為：

A has a thing, like that of B. <---Awkward.

我查了一下字典，metabolism 是不可數名詞。一般來講，不可數名詞很少加a或定冠詞，且不可能加 s 表複數。

所以我用 google.com 查詢 "a metabolism" 及 "metabolisms"，看看一般英文網頁怎麼用，結果是：

metabolisms : 很多人都在用。顯然這些人不 care metabolism 是不可數名詞。

a metabolism: 比較少人用。"a metabolism"後面通常都會加別的名詞，"a"是用來修飾後面的名詞而不是"metabolism"

所以我覺得 (A)(E) 的 "a metabolism" 很奇怪，(C)(D)的 "metabolisms"不可能對。(B)的"the metabolsim"還算有點道理：(B)
的"the metabolism"是複數，指"many dinosaur species" 的 "metabolsim"，後面又複數 "were" 應該不算錯

不可數名詞可以有複數?
是不是有 the + 不可數N --> plural noun 的用法呢?

真是怪了，我查longman online和Cambridge 上面都說metabolism是可數也是不可數，那應該是有兩種用法都行

答案是A沒錯
B) were應該改成was 去和 the metabolism 呼應
C, D) those of....mammal's... 雙重所有格 錯
E) that of...mammal's雙重所有格; 而且句意變成species有metabolism... 怪異

硬外，我沒印象有the + 不可數N = plural noun
不知道Dibert說的是不是the +adj 泛指 plural noun ?
像是 the poor = poor people
