(a)可以很清楚的比出兩種不同的方法來產生heat
用對等連接詞時是可以省介詞的,例子太多 pp有一提就是to V..or V的形式,and前後也可以提介詞
唯一我看過沒例外不能提介詞的是either...or, both..and, not only..but also

如果選(e)的話 我覺得句意很奇怪
前面是 by drawing their body heat directly from the Sun instead of body heat (generated by burning calories)
句意在 body heat之後就沒了而generated by burning calories變成修飾語來修飾heat

文法上看, 介係詞+N 要修飾最近物件
所以優先修飾from Sun → 句意不合
instead of N, 其N不能平行作副詞or形容詞修飾裡的N
這也就是為何instead of不能加介系詞的原因
因此有這種要平行帶有介系詞的N時, 一定用rather than.

(A)rather than 後面用Ving (burning) 明顯平行Ving(drawing).
不然rather than作連接詞用, 本來就是優先平行前句主要物件by drawing
所以跟from Sun很難有任何關係!
如果硬要平行sun, 應該也要加定冠詞the. 這邊沒有!
it在此的確會有意見, 不過也常看到代名詞指代前面核心物件, 所以相較之下
指代不清可議空間很大! 不應成為絕對性錯誤因而判斷對錯!
