In the idiom "not only.... but also....", also can be omited in ordinary usage, but OG prefers " not only...but also..." to " not only....but " . OG regards " not only...but.." as being unidiomatic. You can see a lot of examples in OG's explanation.

BTW, please clearify this : Not only V + S, but S also....

S cannot be omitted in this condition. Also, u can find the example in OG.

如果是blablabla not only V1 ... but also V2...這種狀況應該是idiomatic的標準用法(V1 V2應該可以依題目內容調整為N1 N2...就是要對稱就是了)
的確這種idiomatic的情況下好像also是不能省略的

但是如果not only倒裝用法提前的話
Not only do + S + V..., but S also V....
這邊的not only ... but also...應該對稱的就變成是兩個子句
所以but also裡的主詞S應該就不能省
S能出現的地方也變成只有but跟also的中間了

所以
a)錯在gave (it應該沒問題)
b)錯在which以及but also句子沒有主詞
c)run-on
e)not only V1...應該接but also V2...but also沒有also也多了it

看起來d)變成正確選項了

補充ㄧ下,答案C中 "The systematic...United States,..."逗號前這部分跳過逗號中的修飾語往後找根本沒動詞,也就是沒完成的句子,我想也是錯誤之一.

看過上面大大們找出的其他選項錯誤之外,
我覺得從句意上來說也應該是D比較適合,
not only A but also B 當中 A,B兩者是不是應該"同向"的概念比較合邏輯,
因為意思是" 不只...而且..."
本題creat farmland and give inexpensive houses 是好處,
但cause erosion and deforest whole regions 是壞處,
覺得是反向的概念, 若使用not only A but also B 覺得很不合邏輯
用轉折的語氣會比較合適吧.
