這一題GMAT Club跟TestMagic兩個網站裡面的討論到目前為止的結論是選A

綜合上面兩個網站跟我的想法，B有下面幾個問題:

1. and also=also (redundant)

2. The nineteenth-century chemist Humphry Davy presented the results of his early experiments in his “Essay on Heat and Light,” a critique of all chemistry since Robert Boyle as well as a vision of a new chemistry that Davy hoped to found.
B. a critique of all chemistry following Robert Boyle and also his envisioning of a

上面紅色的his可以指Davy也可以指Boyle (ambiguaty)
(顯然不是指Boyle因為後面接Davy的希望)

3. follow在句意上比較像是"追隨"，跟其他選項中的時間副詞表達從Robert Boyle之後好像有一點不太一樣

不過，
1. 我記得and, also 意思不同
考古題中莫老應該有提出原題有also 選項沒a lso 改變句意的解釋過吧！所以不至於 redundant 呀！

2. his 就更沒問題
沒畫線的 his 代替 Davy，畫線中的his 一定就得代 Davy，
同一個句子裡代名詞不得代不同人或東西，
所以也不會有 ambiguous 之嫌。

3. following 我覺得更對啦！
因為 Robert Boyle 一定是比 Davy 更早的人物啦！

但 A 的 since 當 conj 一定錯， 因為後面不成句子，就算當prep也錯，因為不管它的詞性為何，搭配完成式，這是一定要的啊！！

我當然覺得 B 選項也有瑕疵啦∼
像是 vision 名詞不用，偏偏要用 envisioning 讓人搞不太懂的意思，不過我不懂，不代表他就錯呀？

更何況，時態鐵律一用，A 一定必死的呀！！

通常根據句意會搭配完成式
可是這邊是沒有動詞的
a critique of all chemistry since Robert Boyle
所以你當然看不到完成式

所以 若要 A 對 一定要改成 has presented 才行喲

因為since並不是用來修飾主要子句耶

我個人覺得或許可以反堆成
a critique of all chemistry that has been since Robert Boyle
省略之後就變成原句的樣子

since不是一定只能當連接詞用
當介係詞也可以，後面接名詞就說的通

看了大家的討論，我這題選A，不過中途曾一度接受了B的說法，不過，再看一次，把他翻譯以後，還是以A為優：
H先生發表了一本書，書的內容關於兩件事情：
第一，自Robert以降的評論（對過去的批判）
第二，個人的願景（未來展望）

我用Google法看的
Bennett spares no praise for his singing partner, calling her "the best singer since Judy Garland."

不見得是標準用法喔
而且用法跟原題也不盡相同
只是供參考一下
如果大大們有什麼正確解答就麻煩提供一下喔

這一題我也是在A和B之間做選擇

B a critique of all chemistry following Robert Boyle and also his envioning of a (new chemistry that Davy hope to found)

這樣好像看到 the ving of N的結構，所以我就直接刪掉這一個選項

這種sb's Ving of sth 這不是OG裡面最忌諱的嗎
所以贊成A

另外在and 跟 as well as的用法上
我總結一下我所學到的 如果有不對的地方 希望大家不吝地糾正我
and跟as well as的意思是不同的
A and B --- A跟B的比重是一樣的
A as well as B --- B是從屬關係 A才是句子強調的重心

我想問另一個大家都沒討論到的問題：
1. chemistry是不可數名詞，有 a chemistry這個說法嗎？
2. a vision of a xx 好像不太合乎語法，通常不是說 a N of the N, 或 a N of Ns(可數N) 或是 a N of N(不可數N) 嗎？
所以我覺得A的最後一個字"a"實在看得很礙眼

再者，我在google上查到很多把critique當動詞用的用法，
(但在字典裡也找不到)，先假設可當動詞用，
那麼D好像也不錯
"Essay...Light," (which was) critiquing all chemistry from Robert Boyle forward and (Davy) also (presented) a vision of new chemistry

括號是被省略掉的部分，
,+Ving...修飾那本書，
from xx foward 跟 a vision of 都符合慣用，
prsented the result of 與 presented a version of 平衡。

請問我這樣講算是歪理嗎？謝謝

這題我選A.
這裡的句意應該是
"一本評論,其中包括自從Robert以來的化學,以及Davy他自己期望找到的新化學"
AB兩句都在闡述這樣的句意,
B中,
"自從"可以用following吗?
"展望"已經有VISION這個單字可用了,
需要用到動名詞當作名詞使用嗎?
更甚者,句意有"也"的意思嗎?
如果沒有,為何畫蛇添足加個"also"?
his本身更怪,句尾已經說明了that Davy hoped to find,
你又加了一個his,就造成了主詞雙重指代,
主句一個his,that子句一個Davy.
你不覺得很怪嗎?
另外,and 跟as well as的確有主從關係的差別,
但這只有在修飾動詞時才會有這樣的顧慮,
這也一向不是ETS的考點,我認為不需要著墨太多.

(B)Following a gradual declension down
(C)After gradual declining down
(D)After gradually declining
(E)Following gradually declining

(E)-Phrase must be introduced by a preposition (after), not by a participle (following)

GMAT 是不是比較不能接受following當Prep.(雖然字典上有這個意思)...
所以這樣看來用since 比用following 好...
