(B)的句子不漂亮是真的, 但是我說不出來為什麼錯, 是因為which的非限定修飾不好嗎? 造成句意變成: 所有的act of Congress都是4/24, 1800通過的, 不知能否這樣解讀?

文法上我覺得美的不得了, 但過我也承認, 這樣的句子的確轉移原題焦點, 並改變了句意, 但是因為看到also, 覺得(A)的also用法似乎有爭議, 但如果說是特別強調修飾establish, 我想我可以接受, 畢竟比較起來, (E)的瑕疵似乎更明顯

而(A)的also前要不要comma, 我認為是沒有不妥, 既不改變句意, 文法又沒問題,,清楚標出形容詞子句的結束, 這樣的句子很常見啊, 英文的標點符號就是用來說明句子結構, 老實說我不太懂comma問題在那?

先說錯的
B 錯在 The act of Congress, which..., making...and also established 的結構. making 這裡不能改為分詞子句, 要嘛加入which...要嘛改成動詞

C.which 指涉不清, established 會被誤會是關係子句的動詞,造成主要子句沒有動詞

D 錯在approved...., making...兩個分詞子句中沒有連接詞, making ...會被誤會為修飾1800

E. also establishing....所引導的分詞子句應該是修飾前面一整個主要子句,也就是說the act of Congress made provision for the removal of the government of the United States to the new federal city, Washington, D.C.這一整件事導致了圖書館的建立,單就句子看沒啥問題,但是句意上與原句出入太大,不佳

A的問題就在於also用的讓人起疑,但是和其他比起來,A是最好的

Approved April 24, 1800 在日期前面省略了一個介系詞on
我認為這個省略用在分詞引導的減化子句使用是可以理解
因為這種子句的功能本來就是希望以簡潔的方式來強調一件事
但是如果像BC中用在句子的中間我覺得則是文法上的錯誤
不知道大家同不同意這樣的說法

B 錯在 The act of Congress, which..., making...and also established 的結構. making 這裡不能改為分詞子句, 要嘛加入which...要嘛改成動詞

B裡面是also，不是and also喔~
所以B的問題只在於不能確定making是不是屬於which從句。

修正一下我的說法~

我覺得這個also很有趣,
大家都太熟not only...but also 這個句型
所以單看到一個also會覺得很奇怪
我一開始看也是覺得怪怪的
但是後來仔細看了幾遍
我發現這個also很合理阿
因為前面也說了act做的一件事(made provision)
只是他用that修飾ACT
而不是用NOT ONLY連接
ALSO應該是拿來強調用的, 跟ONLY呈現相反作用
我想ETS真的想玩點新把戲


附帶題一下 library of congress 真的給他好大一間

都沒人回了，提供一點點個人意見：
(1) 不覺得放一個 also 奇怪。
(2) (A)跟(B) 的毛病不是一樣嗎 ? 都由重到輕，也許 (A) 把 approved (on) April24,1800 擺在前面真的比較好，不過 (B) 若不好，(A)也好不到哪去。
making 很明顯主詞就是 the Act of Congress, 分詞代替連接詞，很難會誤解。

(3) 只有 (E) 是由輕到重，用分詞才能滿足由輕到重的寫法，文法句意都對。also 在 (E) 中剛好說明了 made 和 established... 兩個動詞有同一個主詞，讓本來主詞不明確的分詞構句變的明確。

沒錯，A的確是由重到輕，不好。
但是他的句意是正確的
看到 the act, 莫老大就會問，是什麼act
所以後面的that子句就說明是什麼act
由於本題的重點是在 also established the Library of Congress
所以established做主要動詞，對。

E文法沒錯，由輕到重也很好，但卻改變句意
把應該要說明act內容的make當成了主要動詞，改變句意
直正重點的establish變成了分詞，改變句意

所以選A

看了三頁各位大大的解說,小弟我有一點想法來分享!!
先說 (A)選項,以句意來說, (A)表達的應該比較清楚
1) Approved April 24,1800 應該是脫節結構, 主詞為 the act~~~~被省略
2) 主詞 the act of congress that made provision~~~
我的想法是, that子句修飾 the act, 老莫常說, the act, 甚麼act,後面用
一形容詞子句修飾它
3)根據 item 2), 那動詞就是 establish了....

這樣的句意大家唸起來應該很順了!!

至於 (E),比較無法顯示出原題要表達句意,the act of congress, 大家想想看
在 April 24, 1800或許通過的法案不指一項吧,那請問是那一條法案呢??
the act of congress就無法特指那一條法案了...

請大家參考看看喔!!!
