關於答案D，我的想法給你參考一下...

as在這裡應該是「當作是」的意思。
ex: I work as an auditor.

請將what many observers thought was中的"what"以"the thing which"替換之後， "the thing"可以成為accommodation to的受詞及which的先行詞，而which則引導子句說明the thing，所以was的主詞是這樣來的。至於為何要用was,因為開宗明義就寫in 1933，而且看起來也不像是持續到現在或是真理之類的，加上各個答案都是過去式，所以沒有問題。

這是s+v 的標準句子,而which 之後要接不完整子句呀??
照你的說法,the thing 是was的主詞,
那不就變成accommodation to S + V了嗎??
而to 後要接名詞呀!!

不是很懂你的問題，我試著說說看，也許其他大牛們有別的見解...

ex: She is talking to [the boy who] plays basketball well.

忘了說，many observers thought要單獨看，就像somebody said一樣，應該是不影響句子結構的修飾語，有點像口語的表達，所以不能把thought視為which子句裡的動詞，was才是。

這樣有解釋到你的問題嗎?
