我認為本題，A、B比 drive-ins，C、D、E 比amount。
所以A、C錯，A比drive-ins用less than，C比amout用fewer than
B的as many錯，E的 it 指代不明

不過我覺得copycat說的也有道理，真煩惱。

2. 句尾若還原, 我猜想選項的意思是: there are fewer than one- quarter of that amount (of drive-ins); 因此處amount若指4,000的話, 用number or figure較佳. 若還原為此, 則會出現amount使用的錯誤: 它多與不可數名詞連用 [Longman dictionary: Amount -- a quanity or sum; amount is used with uncountable nouns. With plurals it is better to use number.]

但要解決the number指代的問題,
the number 有沒有可能指到4000? 這個句意就不對
(today the number...還是 the number today 比較清楚呢?

另外 that amount of drive-ins 部分,
雖說amount 照字典解釋的確多和不可數名詞共用,
但OG中有一題竟和可數名詞使用,
請參見 OG243:
the amounts of suspected carcinogens fed to animals
讓我對amount的用法產生疑問

但是我還是覺得D相較起來比較合理
today the number (of drive-ins) is less than one-quarter of that amount. 我覺得amount指4,000是不是比較合理?

amount 應該是和 number=4000 比

再補充兩個理由：
1. 我查BBI字典（搭配字典）
amount當名詞的表達方式，形容詞可用"huge, large, small"接amount
所以用less修飾應該沒問題，用fewer就有點怪
2. Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary裡，amount當名詞的解釋是：the total number or quantity，所以我覺得跟number比較應該可以。

再補充一段從Merriam-Webster複製下來的用法；

usage Number is regularly used with count nouns <a large number of mistakes> <any number of times> while amount is mainly used with mass nouns <annual amount of rainfall> <a substantial amount of money>. The use of amount with count nouns has been frequently criticized; it usually occurs when the number of things is thought of as a mass or collection <glad to furnish any amount of black pebbles -- New Yorker> <a substantial amount of film offers -- Lily Tomlin> or when money is involved <a substantial amount of loans -- E. 後來想想，
但是大家會不會覺得the amount前少了of?
而且如果把the number當成數字解釋，
而amount代表的是數量，
這樣兩者能相提並論嗎?

小弟選了D 但目前覺得CD都不夠好...硬是要選個好一點的 C　後來看看感覺還是比較好

簡單來說句意至上 原文意思是說

當Drive-in在五零年代最流行的時候,在美國總共"有"四千個( Drive-in),但今天的數字只"有"低於"那(that)"的四分之一,

真要從句意看 其實完整把C寫下來應該是 but前後都用there are 當虛主詞　平衡　漂亮　　所以C才會對 但是最前面那個there are 為什麼可以省　　別問我　　我不知道　　小弟我文法修辭一塌糊塗><

用了less表示比較的東西是不可數　　那number為什麼不可數? Amount又為什麼不可數? 一個叫做數字　一個叫做總額　似乎都是可數的單字

D應該是問題點比較多一些　　雖然不注意的話....感覺念起來還蠻順的

不能夠回答這個問題,就是指代不清.
另外,drive-ins是可數名詞,你可以用less吗?
我門不想選虛詞,但沒有其他可選,所以被逼上梁山,
只能選C.
are配可數名詞,正確.
fewer配可數名詞,正確.
that amount明確指定4000,沒有其他混淆,正確.
除了there這個討厭的虛詞,其他都正確.
你說我門除了詛咒ETS,還能做什麼?

我今天有在考古題做到一題類似的
上課抄MoBeBe的筆記時有寫到that amount比the amount指代清楚
所以選that amount比較好
而且這邊的句意應該比較去像there are fewer (drive-ins)所以選(C)
