Dalai Lama accepts Emory University appointment

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- The Dalai Lama, exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, has been named a presidential distinguished professor at Emory University, school officials said Monday.

It's the first university appointment the winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize has accepted, the university said.

The Tibetan leader said in a university statement that he looks forward to offering his services to students and the community.

"I firmly believe that education is an indispensable tool for the flourishing of human well-being and the creation of a just and peaceful society, and I am delighted to make a small contribution in this regard through this appointment," he said.

He is expected to deliver his inaugural lecture during an October 20-22 visit to the university, and to participate in a conference on science and spirituality and an interfaith session on religion.

The appointment is open-ended but provides no compensation, said Emory spokeswoman Nancy Seideman.

The Dalai Lama's role includes providing private teaching sessions with students and faculty during Emory's study-abroad program in Dharamsala, India, and opportunities for university community members to attend his annual teachings. He also will make periodic visits to Emory, the statement said.

Emory also is creating a fellowship in the Dalai Lama's name to fund annual scholarships for Tibetan students who attend its undergraduate and graduate schools.

Goizueta Business School Rises in International MBA Rankings
Financial Times Ranks School 19th among U.S. schools

ATLANTA (February 6, 2007) ?In the Financial Times, international ranking of business schools, Goizueta Business School at Emory University is ranked number 19 among U.S. schools and number 33 worldwide, up from last year number 25 and number 42 positions, respectively.

Dr. Steve Walton, associate professor (clinical) and interim dean and director of the MBA Program, said, it is rewarding to be recognized by this international ranking. The ranking is the result of outstanding work by our alumni, faculty and staff over the years.

The Financial Times ranking of full-time MBA programs assesses the value of an MBA and the schools that offer them. The rankings criteria were chosen to measure the relative strengths in three key areas: purchasing power in the marketplace, diversity of experience and the school's research qualities.

In other rankings, The Chronicle of Higher Education recently ranked Goizueta Business School's faculty research productivity number 2 in Finance, number 6 in Accounting, and number 10 in Marketing. Only three other business schools ?Stern, Kellogg and Wharton ?rank in the top ten in all three areas.

Goizueta Business School also ranks high in other rankings of faculty research productivity ?number 17 globally ?according to the Financial Times.

Goizueta Business School teaches students to become leaders who not only create value for their organizations, but also improve society. Founded in 1919, the school is home to an undergraduate degree program, a full-time MBA program, an evening MBA program, the W. Cliff Oxford Executive MBA program, and a doctoral degree program, together with a set of innovative non-degree executive development programs.
