[討論]What should I reply to this "wait list email"?

Hi,all:

I am applying Wake University's full-time MBA for Fall 2006.
My background is listed below:

Undergraduate: NTU, B.S. in ME
GPA: not very good, around 3.
GMAT: 620
TOEFL: 257
W/E: 5 years in Telecom carrier(Taiwan Fixed Network & Sparq)

I received this email to announce my application status tonight:

"The Admissions Committee has carefully reviewed your application for admission to Wake Forest University's Full-time MBA Program for Fall 2006. At this time, we can only offer you a position on our wait list.
There are a number of reasons why we place candidates on the wait list, and we encourage you to contact our office to discuss your application with us. We have been successful in advising wait-listed applicants in the past and in many instances, applicants have been able to strengthen their candidacy to earn admission. We review our wait list monthly and will notify you immediately if your status changes. If you do not wish to remain on our wait list, please let us know.
Contact us if you have any questions or need additional information. We look forward to hearing from you and appreciate your patience."

I got several questions:
1. In a normal situation, does this email mean I will still have the chance to be admitted? If it does, how long will this period usually be to change my status from "wait list" to "admitted"?
2. Should I reply this email to reveal my eagerness? If I should, what should I write within the mail?

I know my background was not good. However, being neither rejected nor accepted really confused my next step. If anyone got any similar experience as mine, please kindly give me some suggestion. Thanx a lot.

轉一篇我以前在別處寫的舊文，講申請 law school 的 wait list 問題：

候補名單（Waiting list）的運用，在美國法學院的申請過程裡
佔有重要的地位。如果你要申請前五十名的學校，則更是如此。

基本上來講，美國法學院的招生流程，有點像是航空公司賣機票
。一班飛機有四百個座位，基本上不可能只賣出去四百張票，航空
公司在賣票時必然是超賣，因為總有些買了票的客人臨時有事不能
搭這一班飛機。同樣的，一間法學院有四百個新生名額要填滿，但
是學校不可能只發四百份admission offer，因為每個學生都申請多
家學校，一個學生被 A, B, C,…多家學校錄取的可能性很高，而學
生最終只能去一家學校。因此每個學校發出去的 admission offer
數量，都會大於自己的招生名額。但，萬一就算這樣，還沒有辦法
收到足額的學生的話，要怎麼辦？那就是 Waiting List 的妙用了。

傳統上，Waiting List的作法是，學校在已經發出去的admission
offer之外，通常還會發出二、三百份左右的 waiting list 通知。
換言之，這間學校就保有一份二、三百人的候補名單，以備在招生
不足額的時候可以從這份名單上找人補缺。

大部份的學校在使用waiting list的時候並沒有排序，所以能不能
從候補變正選，是需要一點運氣的。美國法學院為了追求學生組成
的多元性，便會根據現有入學組成缺乏的部份──比方說，需要主
修經濟的、或是曾當過工程師的、或是需要一兩個國際學生點綴一
下的──而從waiting list裡補足。

另外一種情況，則是有區分出優先順序的，一般稱之為 preferred
waiting list。這種「遇缺儘先補」的花樣，運作方式如下：在四月
中，學校會要求已經收到 admission offer 的學生繳交學費訂金，
以確認究竟有多少人報到。如果不足額，就優先通知「遇缺儘先」
名單上的申請者。像 Wake Forest 就將我放在他們的 preferred
waiting list 上，並且在第一次學費訂金期限之後，便發email通知
「遇缺儘先」的人打電話和他們的admissions office聯絡。我聯絡
的結果是，如果我真的願意來 Wake Forest，他們會用快遞將 admission
package 寄來，而我必須在收到 admission 三天之後回覆。不過
在經過一番考慮之後，我還是回絕了Wake Forest的邀請，也沒有叫
他們寄admission過來；雖然他們的一年一百六十人、必修課分四班
的小班制相當吸引人…。

如何回覆 waiting list 的通知？假設將你放在waiting list的學
校是你的第一或前三志願，通常的作法是寄一封 letter of continuing
interest，讓學校知道你有意願繼續留在候補名單上；這樣作也會讓
admissions office 的人對你留下比較深刻的印象。如果可能的話，
你也許可以補寄一份 statement，強調你對這間學校非常有興趣，並
且具體列出這間學校吸引你的特色；或者如果你能提出額外的推薦信
，也可以提高你的錄取機會。但是，通常學校會希望一通電話就能夠
補到人，所以，不要同時對太多學校說「你是我的第一志願」！在
statement裡可以強調自己如果得到補缺的機會，「一通電話馬上到」
。不過台灣學生通常還有I-20的問題，所以跟美國人不同，缺乏玩這
種卡位大戰的本錢…
