Agree! Professor Damodaran is very powerful in the valuation field. Even the bulge bracket firms on Wall Street hire him to give training sessions for their bankers! One of the recent alumni I know just finished his training at one of the banks and he listened to Damodaran's valuation course AGAIN.

Besides corporate finance and valuation, we have very strong faculty in financial instruments. Professor Silber (http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~wsilber/) is the king in Foundation of Finance. My boss of my summer job who graduated from Stern 10+ years ago took his classes as well.

I am currently taking Advanced Futures and Options by Professor Subrahmanyam (http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~msubrahm/). He is a guru in derivatives and was one of the first generation students of Black. (Heard of Black-Scholes Model for option pricing?) I learned a lot from both him and my fellow classmates who are into sales and trading.

基本上MBA students很少major in Economics. 不知您想從事何種工作?如果是券商的總經分析師還是有MBA graduate在做的,但是有許多Econ phd或是Econ Master會來跟妳搶工作. 如果只是單純想加強對於Economics的了解,Stern在這方面的師資也是蠻好的.像2004年經濟學諾貝爾獎得主Rober Engle就是Stern的教授.

I was an Economics and Finance major.

Have been very grateful that I took a course from our US#1 economist Nouriel Roubini. (See http://www.rgemonitor.com/) He is just impressive. Period. Go thru his chat room should you have any doubts.

As for the post-ibank career path question, one thing that I have come to realization is that, my experience at Stern has enpowered me to 1) take on jobs that I have not even thought of (such as my current career as an equity analyst) 2) to be not fear of change and take on new roles. I still fancy a marketing job. Who knows if I will work for Sushi and Shopgirl in 5 years? I would put down $100 to bet that more than half of us will be sitting in a different field.

Bottom line - I used to care about my career path; now I don't. I hope those of you who will graduate soon and those who will join our Stern community in the coming year will be empowered the same way.

I would also encourage you not to limit yourselves (at least academic wise) on certain disciplines - don't come in with a goal of "I just want to develop on marketing/finance". I felt that courses that I have taken outside of finance have helped me more than anything else. I also regret that I didn't take the chance to learn about new product strategies (especially Sushi has often rubbed it in by telling me how cool her marketing classes are). MBA is called MBA for a reason. Some are better off applying to M. Finance instead of MBA. Take advantage of the broad offerings of Stern.

這段話我真是再同意也不過。很多人想走財務，就只修財務的課，或是有意從事行銷，就一頭栽進行銷世界，其實很可惜。我通常都會勸這樣的人改唸MS in Finance或MS in Marketing，不要浪費錢唸MBA。

MBA是種綜合教育，目的是培養視野廣闊的全方位領導人，所以就算我的興趣是行銷，也沒有把自己鎖在品牌管理的小小世界裡，反而修了不少財務和策略的課。想想看，未來幾十年，我可能每天都要接觸行銷，不急著現在全部學完，反倒是其他科目，如果不修，日後需要或發現箇中趣味時，一點概念也沒有，後悔也來不及。畢竟哪個行銷人不需要財務概念，哪個財務人做到後來，工作性質不會牽涉到行銷？

目前為止，在Stern修過的財務課程都讓我受益無窮。例如上面有人提到的大師Damodaran，我就有修他最熱門的Corporate Finance，只能說他真的是幽默又專業無敵的大師啊...。

下學期我也會修Game Theory大師Adam Brandenburger的課，他是我們2002年從哈佛商學院挖角過來的明星級學者，研究賽局理論應用於企管的先驅。1996年出版的策略經典《競合策略(Co-opetition)》http://www.books.com.tw/exep/prod/booksfile.php?item=0010274413就是他寫的。「既競爭又合作」創造雙贏的現象，在科技產業中尤其常見，競合、Coopetition也已變成大家朗朗上口、英文字典裡的新字了。

Thanks for asking the question 為什麼學財務的人最後一定會用到行銷. I would say a finance guy doesn't need marketing skills in the end; a finance guy needs it now!

If I can make the bold assumption that everyone (which is fair assumption to make in the MBA circle) has the same potentials and skill sets in the job market, then getting a job offer or excelling in certain fields all boils down to how well one differentiates oneself by selling and marketing better than others.

I have worked as an engineer, a sales person and a finance guy thus far. Though I have never taken on a marketing role, there is not one job that I don't need to think about marketing . i.e. from what role I take in a team, to the way I brand the firm, to the tone I use in delivering a presentation/voice mail, etc.

And that's why MBA is not called M. Finance or M. Marketing, but MBA - it is meant to be a well-round program and it should be.

當你剛進去公司時當associate時
你會比較 FOCUS 在實際的財務分析

但等過了幾年
等你升到 analyst level
你叫要負起跟投資機構直接溝通的責任
一年會有幾趟 "marketing tour"
巡迴美國, 歐洲 或亞洲各城市
直接向投資人推銷你的研究報告
推銷你cover的公司

對一個財務人而言
這時 好的marketing 甚至 sales 技巧其實很重要

依照目前的狀況，可能要把你排在候補名單裡面了。

因為這次報名人數實在是超出我們想像的踴躍，所以我們已經忍痛決定Happy Hour只讓2006年的申請者參加，至於2007年或之後的申請者，會另外視回台同學時間而定，加開幾場分產業興趣的小型Coffee Chat來回答問題。

可是就連這樣，Happy Hour還是沒辦法容納這麼多2006年的申請者。所以我想可能至少有十幾個人在這幾天內會收到我的候補通知吧。

真是不好意思，如果有空位或加開場次，會再通知你的。

簡單回答你的問題：

1. 在Stern MBA申請網頁中有規定，如果你已經在美國拿過MBA，是絶對無法申請的。不只Stern，很多學校都有這樣的規定。

請看「Our Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree is open to qualified persons who hold a four-year bachelor's degree from accredited colleges or universities in the United States, or an equivalent degree from foreign countries (see our list of recommended degrees). If you have already earned an MBA from another college or university within the U.S., you are not eligible for admission.」

不過如果是國際學生，規定就沒有這麼嚴格，你可以申請，只是學校極可能會質疑你為什麼要重念一個MBA，最好在Essay和面試中清楚解釋理由。

2. Stern和大部分其他Top B-schools一樣，都很重視工作經驗和在職表現。沒有工作經驗基本上是不用考慮申請的，最少要工作兩年比較保險，平均工作經驗是五年左右。

關於工作經驗，申請網頁中也有寫「Most applicants have between one and 10 years of work experience and come from a variety of professional backgrounds, such as consulting, financial services, entertainment, consumer products, not-for-profit and technology. Because we value the diversity of our applicants' backgrounds, no industry is favored over another. 」

Stern當然有人唸Econ啊! 不然我們那麼多經濟學權威的教授是教假的嗎?我知道的同學裡就有主修econ的, 只是都不是台灣人...

Professor Roubini的部分Babe學長已經提過了, 但我還想補充一下. 他是柯林頓政府時期的幕僚, 我現在正在修他的International Macroeconomic Policy, 聽他上課真的能感受到他豐富的學問內涵, 他對全球經濟與新興市場環境非常熟悉, 他身為義大利裔美人也教我們用國際化的角度來看世界, 最近Stern的學生社團Sales and Trading Club還請他來跟華爾街知名總經分析師們針對全球總經情勢舉行辯論, 讓聽眾們感受到經濟學切身的實用之處, 對於一年級要找sales and trading job的學生面試也非常有用!

Robert Engle我下學期想去聽他開的Volatility. 當然是要聽這位ARCH Model的發明人兼諾貝爾經濟學獎得主的親身說法啊!

並且, 據我所知, Stern是top B-school裡少數在第一年把個經與總經分開上下學期教的.理由是:經濟其實是金融的基礎, 學校希望我們打好紮實的基礎再去深造金融知識.
