Waitlist Frequently Asked Questions
We appreciate your patience with the waitlist process and have provided this information to answer your questions. If you have additional questions that are not addressed in this FAQ, you may email
admchair@stern.nyu.edu.
Why was my application placed on NYU Stern's waitlist?
The admissions committee has reviewed your application carefully and sees strengths in your background and experience, but is not currently in a position to offer you admission. Admission to NYU Stern is highly competitive and there are many more qualified candidates than there are places in the class. The admissions committee may also have identified areas for improvement in your application. We would like to re-evaluate your application for admission later in the admissions cycle.
Your place on the waitlist gives us the opportunity to further consider your application and gives you the opportunity to strengthen your application.
Can I get feedback on my application? Can I find out which specific parts of my application I need to strengthen?
The admissions committee looks favorably upon candidates who are savvy and show self-awareness. We encourage you to assess your application and identify possible areas of improvement. Please keep in mind that the admissions process at NYU Stern is holistic and competitive. We do not provide specific feedback on individual applications. For ways to strengthen your application while on the waitlist, please see below.
How can I strengthen my application at this point?
No single factor in your application determines the final admission decision. Therefore, we encourage you to review all parts of your application. In our experience, candidates are very often aware of the areas of their application that could use improvement. However, you may find it helpful to review the areas that we evaluate each candidate on: Academic Potential, Career History and Goals and Personal and Professional Characteristics. You also may find it helpful to review the profile of last year's admitted class when assessing your background.
Below are some of the ways you can strengthen your application in each of the three major areas of evaluation.
Academic Potential
o Re-taking your GMAT. We consider only your highest overall score, so there is no downside to re-taking the test if you feel there is room for improvement. The GMAT is a good indicator of future academic performance and an improved score may alleviate concerns in this area. If you intend to re-take the GMAT, please email your test date to
admchair@stern.nyu.edu. Once you take your exam, please fax your unofficial score report to us at 212-995-4231. Even if the score does not improve, please send us the new result. It will signal that you put forth additional effort to improve your application (international students also can consider re-taking the TOEFL if appropriate).
o Informing us of new, relevant coursework or continuing education. Please provide a transcript when your coursework reaches conclusion.
o Providing an explanation of your undergraduate performance (if not already provided).
o Informing us of any new, relevant credentials you have pursued. (e.g. CFA, CPA).
Career History and Goals
o Providing an updated résumé if you have recently become employed. Applicants with recent, significant, relevant work experience make excellent contributors in the classroom and are very desirable to recruiters. Having strong recent work experience can alleviate concerns in the area of career progression.
o Informing us if you have changed firms/organizations or have been recently promoted.
o Providing further information regarding your career goals, including your rationale for pursing the MBA now, relevant skills and background, knowledge of the field/industry, a plan for your career development (if not already sufficiently explained in essay #1).
Personal and Professional Characteristics
o Providing a brief essay to demonstrate your continued commitment to attending NYU Stern.
o Informing us of a new community involvement.
o Submitting a supplemental professional recommendation letter.
New information should only be submitted when it provides a different or updated perspective to the committee.
Please e-mail written submissions to
admchair@stern.nyu.edu or mail submissions to:

Is the waitlist ranked? How many people are on the waitlist?
The waitlist is not ranked, and the number of applicants on the waitlist varies throughout the admissions cycle. There is no pre-determined number of waitlisted applicants.
How do you select applicants from the waitlist? When are decisions made?
As we continue to make admissions decisions and assess the remaining spaces in the class, we evaluate the entire waitlist. For the Full-time program, the waitlist process typically begins in March and can continue through August. An admissions decision may not be made until as late as August. If you are concerned about applying for a visa as an international student, rest assured that we take these visa timing factors into consideration.
How will I know if a decision has been made?
You will receive an e-mail from us when your status has changed, and you can then visit the Application Status Check website.
What are my chances of being admitted?
Since we do not know in advance how many spaces will become available, we cannot estimate your chances of being admitted. We have admitted students from the waitlist in past years, and the number varies from year to year.
I want to submit more information but will not have it within two weeks. Can I still submit it?
You can always submit additional information. If you have scheduled a date to re-take the GMAT (or TOEFL), let us know the date you will be taking the test so we can expect the new scores. While we make every effort to wait for new material to arrive, the admissions committee reserves the right to make final decisions prior to receiving additional information. Materials received after a final decision will not affect that decision.
When I submit my Waitlist Response Form or other materials, how can I check to see if NYU Stern has received them?
You can check the status of your application at any time by visiting the Application Status Check website. This site is directly linked to our database, which is updated constantly. Please be aware that it may take up to 10 days to post receipt of materials once they arrive in our office.
Can I interview with a member of the admissions committee? Should I visit campus?
Interviews are by invitation only and we will contact you if the committee requests an interview. While we appreciate the demonstration of interest signaled by visiting campus or attending an information session, we do not track this information as part of the application process. The best way to demonstrate your interest is by sending appropriate e-mail correspondence.
If I am admitted late, what is the impact on financial aid and class registration?
We are committed to assisting all admitted students with the financial aid and registration process. Please keep in mind that you should start to review our Financial Aid information early in order to begin the process of financially planning for your MBA. Below are a few tips:
* Domestic Students: If you have not already done so, please complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) immediately at
http://www.fafsa.org. As it typically takes 4-6 weeks to process your FAFSA, do not wait until you receive an offer of admission.
* Domestic and International Students: There are many private loan opportunities available. For more information on how to finance your education, please visit our Financial Aid website.
