I heard you.

Vanderbilt University is actually a very well respected private university in the US. Some even compare it to Harvard. Vanderbilt contributes many things to our society. It created the first blue rose.

Nevertheless, not many people in Taiwan have heard this university. In fact, the following universities are well respected private universities that are hardly known to common non-business people in Taiwan: California Institute of Technology, Duke University, Dartmouth College, Washington University in St. Louis, Brown University, Johns Hopkins University, Emory University, Vanderbilt University, and University of Notre Dame. I bet most of people in Taiwan did not know Cornell University before our former president became our president.

Going to those universities above, you would probably gain more respect in the US than going to a public university such as University of California.

Please do not be discouraged. All you have to do is to determine what you value the most. A degree? US experience? Money? Reputation in Taiwan? Or anything else.

I hate to see people put their own needs or standards on someone and tell someone what to do in their ways. People always say to retake GMAT, to reapply, to do what they think the best, or to wait for a couple years. People do not think in other people’s shoes. What do you value the most at this moment in your life? Is Vanderbilt good enough for you? Only you can answer this question.

no matter what school you get in
you should be strongly proud of your school
and also strongly proud of yourself
find out the strength of your school
find out yours, too
and prove that you're betting your career on it
make the school even higher regarded through your own behavior and performance
then people will respect you and respect your school as well
that's called leadership
the value is not given by whatever top school you're in
but created by youself with the resources and spirit of this school

the reputation of schools are built through their students' performance and behavior
it's not because the school has such and such legandary alumni
and you think you'll become one after the training
it's about the spirit you bring in
and the performance you prove that your school can provide you the needed resources
but it's your job to prove your school is a great school

don't get frustrated
PROVE IT.

Orz

Fabulous!!!
You already proved you're the right person with right attitude
no matter what school or company you're in
you already make people respect you!
and people will respect where you're from

the only thing is
you're proving yourself in every second
not 2 or 10 years later

you have to use this attitude in your every single day
if you cannot improve yourself everyday
you won't be able to prove anything after any period of time

Playing devil's advocate here.

Here's a different perspective:

Maybe your boss is right and it's really a compliment in disguise. He/she expects more of you and is disappointed to hear you are settling for just "Vanderbilt."

I can tell you that when I was young, like you, I wanted to hear others' praises. Today, I wished I would have paid closer attention to the things that I didn't want to hear when I was young.

In short, go to ask your boss, with the premise that she's being honest with you, if she thinks you could get better than Vanderbilt and what's better than Vanderbilt in her mind. Then you might not feel bad anymore about the previous conversation. It is also a great opportunity for you to learn better about yourself from deifferent perspective by asking for her opinions/evaluation, if she's comforable with that.
