Tepper CMU w/ Full $$ vs Johnson Cornell w/o $$

文章jstar0730 » 2008-05-20 23:28

Hello

I have recently came across a very difficult decision, that is to choose between CMU with full scholarship for 2 years or Johnson Cornell currently w/o any scholarship (currently negotiating with them).

I would like to seek opinions from you and your thoughts towards this matter.

Which would you choose and why?

Thank you very much for your kind assistance!

It really depends on what area you want to do. Tepper and Johnson both are very nice schools.

For Class of 2009, Tepper achieves very good internship acceptance rate in IB, consulting and corporate finance. About 90% of first year MBA got internship. Around 150 companies make offer to Tepper students. Median salary is as high as $6500 USD per month. This data is not only for domestic American students. It's for international students as well.

I will be very happy to answer you any questions for Tepper's admission. I think you have my MSN already.

Congratulations on your successful application!

My two cents: Since both schools are great, the rankings are similar (same tier), money will be an important factor. Full scholarship is difficult and will also be good on resume. Considering your investment in this degree and the expected return after graduation, I would say Tepper with ful scholarship is a very attractive option. Not to mention that the job market isn't as good as before, no financial obligation would definitely be a huge plus.

Good luck!

I agree with Richard completely. Full scholarship is difficult to decline, and it does add color to your resume.
Both schools are wonderful schools, and you will have almost the same recruiting opportunity.
Now, the problem ends up with if you want to spend extra $100k for an Ivy School on your resume or free ride to the almost same ranking school. If I were you, I would choose the latter.
Personally, I met many Tepper students before, and they are all pretty outstanding.

Good luck.

ROI issue aside

I just want to clarify that the recruitment opportunites are not the same for Cornell v CMU.

#1 Talk to alum who are a few years removed from their MBA so they can speak more objectively about the experience.

#2 I see far more Cornell than CMU alums running around in HK in finance circles. Keep in mind, there is also a strong Cornell undergrad network in Asia.

Folks, let me first say that CMU-Tepper is a great school. However, it is not in the same tier as Cornell. The tiers are as follows:

Tier 1: HBS, Stanford, Wharton

Tier 2: Chicago, Kellogg, MIT

Tier 3: Columbia, Berkeley, Tuck

Tier 4: NYU, UCLA, UVA, Cornell, Yale, Michigan, Duke

Tier 5: USC, Carnegie Mellon, UNC, Texas, Georgetown, etc

Tier 6: The rest.

This is the general consensus based on school reputation, academics, job placement, alumni network, prestige, admission selectivity, etc. There will also be differences in region. For example, in Greater China, schools like Berkeley, Cornell, USC will move up, whereas schools like Kellogg, Tuck, and CMU will move down.

Hi Jenny,

I look forward to having you here.

For my personal ranking for entering Investment Banks.

Tier 1: HBS, Wharton, Chicago, Columbia

Tier 2: The Tepper School of Business

Tier 3: The rest

Just my personal comment:) So, it's very subjective^^

Interesting....= )

For Greater China, I'd put the ranking for finance schools as the following: (By Finance, I am referring to all "front office" positions in investment banks and not just the investment banking function)

1. Wharton

2. Chicago

3. NYU/Columbia

4. MIT/Stanford & HBS (their prestige is undeniable but there are so few of them)

5. Yale/Cornell

6. Other top 15

Hello Mark, interesting ranking for Greater China finance. So from the list it looks like Cornell should place very well into high level finance jobs in HK, Taipei, and Shanghai? I assume the Ivy league prestige helps right?

What's your take on the ranking for Greater China consulting? I would think take out NYU and Yale, replace with Kellogg or Michigan maybe Berkeley? What's Cornell's consulting placement in Greater China like?

Thanks.

Hi guys,

Hope I didn't ignite another battle of mba rankings here ~ Haha ~
However, I really do appreciate you all speaking out your thoughts on the schools' reputations and future career developments ~
Keep the thread going!!

I've spoken to many Tepper people and would love to hear more from Cornellians ~
Cornellians, your inputs, experiences, and/or observations would definitely be appreciated!

Bochong,
It was great speaking to you and thank you very much for your inputs!
I will definitely take your words into cosideration.
Most importantly, congratulations with your offer!! You ROCK!
I might come back to you begging you for a job post mba ~ Haha ~

Jenny,

No matter which school you finally choose, you will be the superstar.Do not spend too much time thinking about which one to join. Instead, you should start to plan your career path. Attitude is everything. Keep Going!

我最喜歡戰學校了,因為文章數會很多 ;devil
雖然有點離題,不過這裡只是平反一下Kellogg的印象
的確,Kellogg是marketing的學校,但是以就業率來說
Consulting 31%, Finance 22%, Marketing 22%
也就是說,Finance也不算是太低

以2007畢業就業報告來說
CMU Kellogg
Finance 29.46% 25%
Investment Bank 9.30% 11%
2Y MBA students 156 531
(抱歉,表格無法顯示的很好)

在I/B比例來說,差異不大,都是10%左右,但如果將畢業人數算進去,那差距就拉開了
以著名公司來說,2007年錄取人數如下:
Morgan Stanley 10
Citi 8
Lehman Bro. 8
Merrill Lynch 8
JPMC 7
Goldman Sachs 6
UBS 4

雖然比不上傳統Finance名校,但跟非M7的學校來比,應該不會較差
