Thanks all.
My thoughts for the essays-
1. "What matters most to you? Why? " -
I personally feel that this 'first impression' kinda decides adcom's appetite for the following essays. What I did is that I thought really thoroughly about the 'key incidents' happened in my life-from family, schools, extracurricular activity, and career, without presetting any answers to this question. (一開始試圖回答這一題的時候,的確會想要編一些"聽起來好像頗fit"的答案,例如diversity of life experiences,但之後會發現很難下筆,即使寫出來也難以感動自己)
When I put down all the important stories that I am proud of /would love to share with others, I realized that there were certain common values which either influenced me to make some decisions, or shaped my perspectives & personalities. These values are what matters most to me. And through telling these stories, the "Why" part could be natually understood and explained.
2. "Why Stanford" -
I spent alot of time figuring out which school I'm interested in the most. And of course I wrote more than one reason in the essays (i.e. courses/resources of certain fields), but the most critical motivation is - People. From the interview with alumni I also felt that "People" is what GSB students appreciate the most. So I'd recommend that this point be addressed in essays and interview.
3. I think that these 2 essays distinguish Stanford from others; they DO care who you are, where you're coming from-your background and past experiences lead to who you are today, and your inner-drive & personality.
From the interview it shows the same way- Stanford DO care about the 'stories', your personal stories. Therefore my recommendation is- think carefully of 2~3 stories that best represent you and your characters/strengths, show your passion, and be yourself!
Happy New Year!
