The following appeared in a speech by a stockholder of Consolidated Industries at the company’s annual stockholders’ meeting.

“In the computer hardware division last year, profits fell significantly below projections, the product line decreased from twenty to only five items, and expenditures for employee benefits increased by 15 percent. Nevertheless, Consolidated’s board of directors has approved an annual salary of over one million dollars for our company’s chief executive officer. The present board members should be replaced because they are unconcerned about the increasing costs of employee benefits and salaries, in spite of the company’s problems generating income.”

Here is my line of reasoing:

the stockholder's speah did not mention below critical infomaiton to support his argument:
1. is hardware division the core busienss unit of Consolidated Industries? If not, other core business may have outstanding performance. and profits is more related to core division instead of HD division.

2. CEO is responsible for the HD division performance?
other factors such as market trend, product market price, competitive products may be also influential.

3. What is the reason for CEO's pay get increased?
if the CEO performs well generally, current salary for CEO is already undermarket value,

4.It may be a strategic plan to cut growth in HD division. And develop somehting else more profitable.
