很多英語單字都是由“字根”組成，常用的英語字根有200多個，若是能記住這些字根，對記憶英語單字非常有好處，但問題是，這200多個字根，卻怎麼也記不下來。

這200多個字根其實就是英語裡最簡單的“單字”，比如av, con, par, tent, aqu, mir, dent, frag……等，但它們卻似乎比長單字還難記，天天看頂多就是混個“眼熟”，無法做到扎實記憶，這究竟是怎麼回事呢？

英語字根難記的原因有三個，

一是字根沒有固定的發音
有的字根連一個單字都算不上，甚至連一個音節都算不上（如av, aqu等），造成不少字根無發音，無發音便難記憶，大家都應該有這樣的體會，走在大街上，經常會看到一些外國商標文字，由於不知道其發音，便總是看著眼熟，卻總也記不住。

二是字根會變形，沒有固定的拼寫
英語字根由於只是組成單字的零散零件，因此其拼寫不固定，有的字母甚至可以隨意添加，如av寫成avi、ava、avia也可以，aqu寫成aqua、aquo也可以，添加上去的字母一般都是用來和別的字根做發音連接的，由於和不同的字根連接就可以用不同的字母，這使得字根後面以 a結尾也可以，以i結尾也可以，沒有固定的樣子，記不住他們變幻莫測的樣子。

第三個原因，就是字根與字根意義之間少有關聯，沒有關聯，就很難記住字根。

有沒有辦法解決字根難記的問題呢？
不容易，不過在不少人的努力下，有部分字根已經不那麼難記了。

常用的作法是「找一個你已經很熟悉的單字, 從這個單字出發, 反過來記憶這個字首,字根或字尾; 而不是拿著字首字根字尾的總表, 直接去一個一個記憶。」

例1
exit → ex (向外) + it (走) → (讓人從內)走向外頭的地方, 就是出口。
記住這個單字後, 馬上就可以延伸到很多其他 含有 it- 的字：

這是2010年上映的電影，我到了2011年的最後一天才看它，一方面是這一年來對夢與潛意
識的主題產生極大興趣，一方面是前幾天才在論壇抓這部片(這什麼爛理由…)。電影劇本
是導演Christopher Nolan耗費十年心血親手催生的孩子，與國片〈賽德克巴萊〉一樣，
魏德聖在拍〈海角七號〉之前就已經開始寫劇本，寫了十年才籌到資金拍攝。

片名「Inception」有「啟動、開始」的意思，韋氏大學詞典的解釋是「an act,
process, or instance of beginning: commencement」，台灣譯「全面啟動」，這同時
讓我想到另外一部片「啟動原始碼：Source Code」。本片由李奧納多‧ 皮卡丘 狄卡皮
歐主演，他的職業是商業間諜(corporate espionage)，透過進入目標的潛意識(the
subconscious minds)，利用夢中夢的方式盜取重要資訊，因此大陸又翻成「盜夢者」
(extractor，白話一點就是dream-stealer)。

趁剛看完對劇情還記憶猶新的時候，馬上找英文維基百科把簡介和劇情的描述看一遍，學
習相關的關鍵字和表達方法。影片一開始就出現totem「圖騰」。第一次知道這個字是在
看《巴朗詞表》的時候，印象非常深刻，同時我聯想到佛洛伊德 1913 年一本關於人類學
與心理分析的著作，叫《圖騰與禁忌》(德文Totem und Tabu，英文Totem and Taboo)。
在「全面啟動」中，圖騰是幫助主角Cobb(李奧納多飾演)和他老婆Mal區別夢境與現實的
重要物品，如果那個陀螺(spinning top)可以一直轉不停，表示他們還在夢裡，而這也是
Cobb和Mal最重要的情感連結。維基百科的敘述是：Each of the extractors carries a
totem, a personalized small object whose behavior is unpredictable to anyone
except its owner (使用同位語說明什麼是totem), to determine whether they are
in another person’s dream. Cobb’s totem is a spinning top which perpetually
spins in the dream state.

Mal在劇中的角色是 antagonist ，相對於李奧納多(protagonist)。身為盜夢者，有時候
自己也會分不清是夢還是現實，尤其當對方與你在情感經驗上有強大連結的時候。因此李
奧納多拼命想完成任務，然後回到現實與小孩團聚，潛意識裡老婆Mal卻一直出現使他無
法專心，破壞他的努力 (to sabotage his efforts)。

整天作夢是李奧納多的工作，必須進入夢的世界才能執行任務，但除非他有成千上萬嗤嗤
蟲隨時帶在身邊，不然怎能隨時說作夢就作夢? 原來他有化學家朋友Yusuf的幫助，幫他
打鎮靜劑(sedative，動詞sedate)，打完瞬間進入夢鄉。

為了得知Fischer的夢，他們分配好一個造夢計畫，共三層：

第一層：Yusuf的夢，下雨天的倫敦街道，綁架(abduct)費雪，費雪潛意識裡的防衛投射
(projections)成一群武裝傭兵(militarized subconscious)開始追殺李奧納多一行人。

第二層：Arthur的夢，商務飯店(corporate hotel)，彼得叔叔進場，到底彼得叔叔是否
覬覦Fischer父親的遺產，綁架案是自導自演? 傭兵持續追殺。

第三層：Ariadne的夢，高山上皚皚白雪覆蓋的武裝堡壘，保險箱(safe)裡的秘密就在這
精心設計的迷宮(電影裡先出現maze，後來用labyrinth)中。傭兵鍥而不捨繼續追殺。

越深一層時間會過得越慢，第一層的一秒是第二層的十分鐘，第二層的十分鐘是第三層的
半小時，所以執行任務時要算好時間差，分秒必爭，才能進入同一層夢。如果中間出了什
麼差錯，可能就會進入無止盡的混沌狀態(limbo: a deep subconscious level where
they may lose their grip on reality and be trapped indefinitely)。Limbo有點像
佛教講的「劫」，前天看〈地藏王菩薩本願經：婆羅門女的故事〉裡面就有講到死後在地
獄永不得超生的混頓狀態，感覺和「全面啟動」中在夢中死亡，回不到現實而墮入無底深
淵limbo的概念很像。

夢者從深一層的夢回到上一層要透過撞擊，產生突然下墜或高處墜落，像是坐椅子往後仰
差點摔倒的感覺。在影片裡有個特別的名稱叫做kick。維基百科的描述是：The
dreamers will then ride a synchronized series of 『kicks』 (the van plunging
off a bridge, a fall between hotel rooms, and a collapsing building) back up
the levels to wake up to reality.

每一層夢發生的事件對下一層都有影響，所以第一層夢裡Yusuf開車彎來彎去(evasive
driving)跑給傭兵追，在第二層旅館場景表現出來的就是重力場變來變去(distorted
gravity)，迫使旅館場景造夢者Arthur要improvise a kick「隨機應變、即興演出」，他
把大夥綑起來一起搬進電梯，然後炸掉電梯纜繩(elevator shaft)產生急速下墜。第三層
夢則是透過雪崩(avalanche)。每層夢透過第一層夢者Yusuf播放音樂(聽起來有點像法式
香頌)做為暗號。

念文學的人或許對主角Cobb的心理轉折比較有興趣。Cobb在影片最後向團隊中唯一女性
Ariadne懺悔，他拿老婆作思想植入的實驗(Inception: the planting of an original
idea into a target’s subconscious)，終於老婆Mal回到現實時還不認為她已經回到現
實，跳樓結束自己生命。這是Cobb心中永遠的痛，他一直為此感到罪惡，也是這個罪惡感
讓Mal在他的潛意識裡揮之不去，他必須不斷告訴自己眼前看到的Mal不是現實世界的人，
只是夢中幻影。透過懺悔，Cobb的心靈得到淨化(to attain catharsis)，因此在第三層
夢時決定留下來找Saito。

Catharsis這個字很重要，是所有外文系學生在大一西洋文學概論課一定會遇到的字。來
細讀韋氏大學詞典Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary對catharsis的解釋：

: a purification or purgation that brings about spiritual renewal or release
from tension
: elimination of a complex by bringing it to consciousness and affording it
expression
Catharsis是心靈淨化，念文學的人可能會注意文本裡角色如何得到心靈淨化的曲折過程
；念語言的可能會注意catharsis的搭配詞(collocation)，也就是「得到」淨化在英文裡
會用attain這個動詞。

最後要引述Cillian Murphy對所他扮演富二代Fischer這個角色的說法，純粹是因為裡面
出現一個GRE單字：「Fischer was portrayed as a petulant child who’s in need
of a lot of attention from his father, he has everything he could ever want
materially, but he’s deeply lacking emotionally.」Petulant意思與peevish相近，
兩者都有petulant/peevish child的搭配詞組合，讀書會時有特別提出來解釋過，這裡當
作複習。

GRE字彙不勝枚舉，在瀏覽The New York Times關於「全面啟動」的報導時，就出現兩個
我的睡前小書—綠色皮Vocabulary Builder—裡面的兩個單字：

1. phantasmagoric「變幻不定的」

Something phantasmagoric features wild and shifting images, colorful patterns
that are continually moving and changing.

(此字一看就知道與phantasy有關，周杰倫有「范特西」，我有「飯特稀」。覺得冷可以
自己加外套…)

2. delirium「精神錯亂、譫妄、狂熱」

an acute mental disturbance characterized by confused thinking and disrupted
attention usually accompanied by disordered speech and hallucinations (比較常
見的意義是frenzied excitement <he would stride about his room in a delirium
of joy ─ Thomas Wolfe>，注意粗體字的搭配用法。)

很多人都會覺得紅寶很難吞下去
像被插鼻胃管沒插好一樣又嘔又吐血 最後管子還是在體外(?)
但其實紅寶真的是打仗時穩住你腳步的重要戰備

當時我也迷途過
一度想要用網路上的17天背完紅寶計畫 從A開始把紅寶塞進體內
但很快就發現 因為大部分都是全新的單字 我幾乎一整天都在背紅寶
其他事都不用做了。
甚至只要進度一落後 就是一連串痛苦的悲劇
持續趕不上進度就會覺得自己是廢物 根本不配去考試T_T


紅寶和11張不同在於
11張可以快速背起來 快速複習 內容大約3000多字
然而紅寶書根據倫倫部落格說 加上衍生單字恐怕超過一萬字

11張
當時背11張 盡量背熟到朋友拿整張起來考我 都可以回答
或能夠自己在心中默背這整張有什麼單字 (約300字)
以及背到目前為止出現過的同義詞有哪些也一併默念

例如: 背到alleviate 腦海就浮現allay, assuage, mollify, palliate...
同樣的，如果背到palliate，也把其他都默念一遍

雖然現在不考類比反義了 但這樣很快就會抓到對單字的感覺
去發現它們之間的邏輯和共通性
因為GRE的單字是背不完的 呵呵

紅寶
階段一:
11張背完前 先把紅寶當作字首字根辭典!

像theo-有神、上天的意思
anti-
ante-
con-
-
-
-
每學到一個，就把紅寶中有同樣字首的字全部看一遍
反正紅寶是按字母順序排的嘛 翻過去快速拿螢光筆畫一遍、看一遍就好
還不用死背
因為下次你還會因為別的字而再度翻過來
到時候你看到自己之前看過了 就再拿另一支筆作記號 記得了的就不用做了

等到你發現某些類別的字(不是某單字)鬼打牆一直出現

那些字不是很重要 就一定是你的死穴

而且有了11張再背紅寶
就像美術課時畫畫已經畫好了框 老師突然收作業你也有個底了。
剩下要做的就是塗顏色了
不會因為塗的不夠漂亮就一切都毀了
但塗得越漂亮 這張畫就越高分
所以沒背完也不要覺得自己一頭撞死算了

階段二:
1.把不熟悉或常混淆的字首一股作氣背完 剷平總是跌倒的坑
2.分析哪幾個字母單字最多和最少，背完它們

最常被我攪在一起的就是con- com- 開頭的單字orz
還有字母P和S

前者是太多相似的字 又常出現C後面一堆nnmmoo的字

至於P和S是我自己覺得單字意思分布比較廣 所以不容易聯想


另外，我那時候寫下26個字母各有幾頁的單字
X, Y, Z很少我想大家都知道

但最多的單字的五個字母可能就跟想像不太一樣囉! 呵呵
先把你判斷並不多的那幾個字母 背完它們。

「你只要有種考Y開頭，就絕對難不到我。」要用這種心態。


然後換最多的那幾個字母 背完它們。

最多的那幾個字母裡一定有你之前查字首時看過不少遍的部分
也會有很多熟悉的字
同時也會很常出現在考題中、答案中、干擾選項中

「你只要有種考這幾個字母，就絕對難不到我。」要用這種心態。


最多跟最少的字母大約各五個
解決了，再兩邊一起增加
變成各七個之類。

這時候，
你已經背完11張
大致翻過整本紅寶的各種字首，有概念

常害你跌倒的字首解決了(通常是很龐大的量且分布在各個字母中)

你知道如果考某些字母開頭的單字，你一定會

而剩下那些，也不那麼令人擔心，你可以繼續把顏色塗滿、塗完整

因為已經解決掉通常很冷僻的字(單字少的字母)

以及很常見又容易搞混的字(大量出現的字母開頭以及大量出現的字首)



最後

如果還是遇到真的一直忘個不停、盯著看了五分鐘卻仍然轉頭就想不起的單字
就把它們匯聚在一起 「造成同一個句子」

句子不需要符合邏輯，只要詞性位置對就好，越怪異越好記

例如: The sultry weather makes me surly.
sultry (a.)酷熱的
surly (a.)壞脾氣的、乖戾的
以上就是我一直搞混(bemused)後會造的句子，瞬間就可以記起來了!

我記得我還造過很多莫名其妙的句子

當時特別喜歡拿身邊的男友當主角(protagonist)

像是「我男友卑鄙(despicable)、狡詐cunning
又陰沉sullen，但我仍然覺得他是無瑕的(impecable)，
每次見到他時心中都感到一陣悸動(whenever I see him, my heart
begins to palpitate)」

大概是這樣囉!!!

spank註：另外，找一個句子，裏面有好幾個gre單字的句子來記，也是背gre單字的好方法

求學背景: 台大物理系大四
英文背景: 從幼稚園大班開始上雙語安親班到國一
考試地點: 銘傳大學基河校區
考試成績: V162 Q170 AW4.5（QVQVQ）
備考教材: 舊紅寶書（爛透了）、字彙的力量、xx各科課程

首先我必須說，學英文真的是愈早愈好。我讀的那間幼稚園兼安親班，英文是外師教學，
所以我自認口音跟語感都接近外國人的水準。再加上大量閱讀（小時候哈利波特七集全
都讀英文版）、大量玩英文遊戲（我很喜歡玩電腦，而網路上找得到的遊戲幾乎都英文
的），造就了我讀英文的速度跟讀中文一樣快。有了這些底子，填空跟閱讀的課我就不
太需要，只各上兩堂，了解題型而已。不過字彙跟寫作課就幫助很大了：

GRE單字真的超級難，縱然我有語感也沒用，單字沒背就是不會。我上大學就計劃要出國
唸書，於是買了當時很夯的紅寶書，三年多來斷斷續續硬熬著總算讀完，讀到底了前面
的也差不多忘光了。所以背單字重點不在「多」，因為你肯定背不了那麼多；而是在
「精」，要每個單字都符合GRE愛考的方向才有用。在這點上字彙的力量跟xx字彙班都
做得很好，而且麟渡兮字彙還將同義字反義字直接整理放在一起，複習時背一次就是一
整組加強連結，比起那些照abc字母順序排列的單字書好太多。xxx主打的字源教學法
算是字根字首的升級版，不僅可以針對這個單字本身加強印象，還可以拿字源出去猜一
些沒看過的單字可能是什麼意思。
在去xx之前我曾經先行看過一些填空題，卻發現單字一大堆都看不懂，著實沮喪了一
會兒......上完字彙班之後再回來看，發現居然多看懂了不少，感到振奮XDD　不過即便
如此，上戰場時填空題每題還是會有兩三個單字看不懂，就只好用字源來猜，也不知到
底猜得對不對了。印象最深刻的是hagiography這個字，這什麼鬼啊又臭又長，看不懂啦。
我自己估計填空答對率1/2，閱讀近乎全對，平均總答對率3/4，在單字部分表現並不突
出。因為是QVQVQ，在第二個V我看到有邏輯題的出現，可以確定是進了高分區。

[真經]
我主要就挑高頻單字出來背而已。原本希望能靠這個猜中幾題，但因為時間關係沒來得
及上完，考出來也沒有猜到的題目。

[寫作] Argument #149 Issue #40
這又是另一大重點。這個分數結果證明了威廉老師的方向是對的，只是我們有沒有能力
把它實行出來而已。老師的建議是寫六段式，也就是頭尾+中間四段內容，但是我知道自
己絕對來不及寫那麼多，所以只有寫五段。少背模板，多寫content words（真的有內容
的文字）而非模板式function words（純粹為了格式需要，不管放到哪一題都可以用的
文字），真的必須寫格式時就照抄writing instruction吧。用字不需鋪張華麗，通順即
可，不要犯文法錯誤。Argument必打的點包括數字、CP（給建議）、他因、如果題目是
提供suggestion的話還可以打他辦不到，再加上我這題又有打到爛的survey，實在超好
發揮。Issue我也來不及上完，但是大方向抓住：開頭第一段先對題目裡的名詞做定義，
再來內容就分「領域」「時間」「情況」進行討論。內容三段我前兩段主要表達支持立
場，第三段再把繮繩一收，買個保險說「雖然我支持這個說法，但是不能無限上綱，而
且在某些特別情況下我反而不支持，例如......」。總之就是內容要有正有反，不能一
面倒就對了。最難的部分大概是給出specific example了，要舉名人佳句、知名企業等
等，畢竟Issue不像Argument有現成材料可以發揮。我這題是談教育的，剛好知道
COURSERA所以寫了上去，反正就是儘量具體。最後一段再給個「合」，正反方調停一下
，給個美好的結尾。字數我大約都是把作答區寫滿+滑鼠往下滾五行，還請有經驗的人幫
忙估一下這樣是多少字囉。

今天無意中看到一個Washington Post 上面的句子

為了弄懂consumerist lunacy，我花了幾分鐘看了全文，感覺很有趣，我把它貼出來和大家分享。這篇文章用字不是很深，很適合在背gre單字的人看。文中作者把他的過節心情娓娓道來，順著脈絡，你很快就可以弄清楚何謂consumerist lunacy。

簡單解釋

慣用語 absolve sb from/of sth
They were absolved of all responsibility for the accident . 他們被免除對這起意外事故的一切責任。

[An unabridged version of a short essay that ran Dec. 26]

In my house, Christmas is a secular holiday built around gifting, followed immediately on the 26th by another secular holiday built around regret.

It’s the day everyone returns stuff to the store, particularly the presents that I, the Dad, bought at the last minute without fully considering whether anyone in my house would actually want, for Christmas, a wheelbarrow. But isn’t that a practical gift? A wheelbarrow is particularly useful at Christmastime when one needs to convey a large quantity of heavy consumer items from the front door to the car in order to return them to the store.

This day of regret is a time for assiduous purging of anything that can be defined as “stuff.” Resolved: We have too much stuff. Thus, not only do unwanted, wrongly sized and/or hideously inappropriate gifts (who knew that rhinestone-studded knee-high leather boots weren’t fashionable this year?) depart the house, so do countless random objects in the house. This stuff is swept away as collateral damage from the general sense of revulsion – and I don’t think that’s too strong a word – over the consumerist, materialist madness has incited all of us to overgift one another at Christmas (because we fear someone might feel undergifted and inadequately loved).

How many objects now exist in a typical home? I am guessing that my house contains more than 150,000 distinct objects. Many of them are women’s shoes. To my eye, many of these shoes do not appear to be useful for walking. The shapes of the shoes don’t seem to match the shape of human feet! It’s like, hey, this would be a nice shoe for a species of animal with narrow, tapering hooves.

A few years back, when the daughters were still interested in dolls, we probably had, on any given day, something like 20,000 shoes in the house, which may seem like a high number until you realize I’m including the American Girl doll shoes, the Barbie shoes, the Kelly doll shoes, in addition to the shoes worn by the actual humans. Question: Do we really need parallel, non-overlapping, differently sized doll universes? As you know, a doll’s shoe is inherently migratory, and is always lost until it is rediscovered when you step on it at 3 in the morning, hopping in pain as your unleash vile curses upon that effing Barbie.


When the girls age out of the doll phase, you have the dilemma of what to do with all that stuff. Sell it at a yard sale? Total strangers will come to your house and look at all your displayed clutter, which is an inherently undignified encounter both for seller and buyer, particularly when the buyer gets a grimace on his or her face that basically says, “All this should be piled up and lit on fire.”

Some people are great at getting rid of clutter. These are spiritual people who can survive for weeks on oxygen and distilled water alone. But for most of us, clutter not only survives our periodic purges, it continues to reign supreme, dominating the home. Ultimately you have no choice but to surrender. There are entire corners of the basement, attic or garage that are no-go zones.

On the day of regret you may find yourself penetrating one of these areas, fired with clutter hatred. You are subconsciously thinking you can absolve yourself of consumerist lunacy if you load up eight or 10 jumbo garbage bags with about 15,000 unnecessary objects. But the mission is never accomplished. Inevitably, you’ll discover a box of artwork made by the kids in elementary school. And old Christmas cards from friends you haven’t seen recently. And mementos of your youth and adventures long ago. You’ll lose all momentum, stuck in your stuff – marinating in the scrapheap of a modern life.
