The cowbird can seem a rather comical creature with a slow, awkward walk and often upraised tail. Less_________ is the cowbirds‘ habit of laying their eggs in the nests of other birds. The ________ nesters will usually accept the cowbird egg and raise the baby cowbird as their own. Unfortunately, cowbird eggs hatch sooner than the eggs of other species and the young cowbirds _________, using their size to their advantage in getting more food from the parents.
Blank (i) Blank (ii) Blank (iii)
A. amusing D. feckless G. grow quickly
B. painful E. resistant H. leave the nest
C. galling F. unwitting I. share their food

If animal parents were judged by human standards, the cuckoo would be one of nature's more____creatures, blithely laying its eggs in the nests of other birds, and leaving the incubating and nurturing to them.
(A) mettlesome
(B) industrious
(C) domestic
(D) lackluster
(E) feckless

Medieval cathedrals still stand as marvels of architecture, but as far as modern science is concerned, medieval physics and chemistry are simply irrelevant, at best a dead end, at worst the very __ of what science is supposed to be.
A. exemplar
B. glorification
C. reflection
D. dilution
E. antithesis

spank解說:
medieval physics and chemistry are simply irrelevant,->逗號之後,表示與irrelevant同義,
A.典範
Connie ' s political views are the complete antithesis of mine .

Despite assorted effusions to the contrary, there is no necessary link between scientific skill and humanism, and, quite possibly, there may be something of a____between them.(老GRE真題)
(A) generality
(B) fusion
(C) congruity
(D) dichotomy
(E) reciprocity

spank解說:
no necessary link between scientific skill and humanism, ->逗號之後,表示與no link同義,
(A)普遍性
(B)融合
(C)一致性
(D)dichotomy二分法 [+between]
a dichotomy between his public and private lives

Although the initial cost of installing solar panels to produce electricity can be ______, the financial benefits are realized for years to come in the form of reduced electric bills.
(A) encouraging
(B) minimal
(C) exciting
(D) misleading
(E) exorbitant

(Kaplan, p. 57)

ans.
======================================================================

The adjective exorbitant was originally a legal term to describe a case that was outside the bounds of the law. It comes from the Latin roots — the prefix ex, meaning "out of," and orbita, meaning "wheel track." You can see how the word now has come to be described as something that has gone way off the beaten track, especially in terms of price and value.

an exorbitant price, rate, demand etc is much higher than is reasonable or usual 〔價格﹑費用﹑要求等〕過高的; 過分的

It ' s a good restaurant but the prices are exorbitant .

The Yanukovich government says the deal saddled Ukraine with an exorbitant price for Russian gas supplies.

12. At their best, (i)___book reviews are written in defense of value and in the tacit hope that the author, having had his or her (ii)___pointed out, might secretly agree that the book could be improved.
Blank(i) Blank(ii)
(A) abstruse (D) strengths
(B) adverse (E) transgressions
(C) hortatory (F) assumptions

Spank解說

關鍵:might secretly agree that the book could be improved.

(B) adverse?

Gre

Ex1.
~the important articles they ___ were published too recently for inclusion.

1.discusssed
2.omiitted

因為有inclusion( 包含在內)的原故

Ex2.
The fortesslike facade of the museum of Cartoon Art
seems calculated to remind visitors that the comic strip is an
art form that has often been ____by critics.

1.unnoticed
2.assailed

選unnoticed的呢,應該想是著重在remind這詞;

The garden is at its best this month .

(A) abstruse
(B) adverse
(C) hortatory

(D) strengths長處
(E) transgressions
(F) assumptions假設

tacit :
tacit agreement, support etc is accepted or understood without actually being officially agreed
a tacit agreement that no company would cut their prices

2009/12/14 21:34(http://blog.udn.com/corecorner/3588765)

Transgression。

I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect.

2. beyond 超過
3. on the other side

The tension soon transmitted itself to all the members to all of the crowed.

Transcribe:
Transcript:

這個詞來源於拉丁詞transiere和transier iere=to go, to depart,to die 有點像中文裡的曇花一現的意境,人生苦短,看來是中外皆然的感歎。
Transiere

Trance:
Transit:
Transition:
Transitory:
Translucent:
Transparent:透明的 -parere=to show,是不是有點像appear?

progress, n.
retrogress, n.
aggress, v.
congress, n. 會議(to go together, 去到一起開會)
transgress, v. 踰越(trans-=across, to go across跨越)

The activists’ energetic work in the service of both woman suffrage and the temperance movement in the late nineteenth century (i)__________ the assertion that the two movements were (ii)__________.

Blank (i)
A undermines
B supports
C underscores

Blank (ii)
D diffuse
E inimical
F predominant

==============================
==============================

其中最有影響的是婦女道德改革運動(Female Moral Reform)、禁酒運動(The Temperance Movement)和廢奴運動(The Antislavery Movement)。

=============================

Spank解說
(At their best, (i)___book reviews are written in defense of value)一樣,本題沒有任何轉折詞,邏輯分析極為簡單,也是以文意為主導,可不要把時間

The sentence is about the implications of the activists’ energetic work for some assertion about the woman suffrage and temperance movements. The second blank, however, obscures the nature of that assertion. But it is clear that the “energetic work” could either support an assertion that the two movements were similar, or undermine an assertion that the two movements were opposed. “Undermines” and “inimical” make for the only meaningful statement. Thus, the correct answer is undermines (Choice A) and inimical (Choice E).

1.The sentence is about the implications of the activists’ energetic work for some assertion about the woman suffrage and temperance movements.

2.The second blank, however, obscures the nature of that assertion.

3.But it is clear that the “energetic work” could either support an assertion that the two movements were similar, or undermine an assertion that the two movements were opposed.

4.“Supports” is offered as a choice for the first blank (as is the somewhat similar “underscores”), but there is no corresponding term in the second blank, nothing along the lines of “similar” or “compatible.”

5.“Undermines” and “inimical” make for the only meaningful statement. Thus, the correct answer is undermines (Choice A) and inimical (Choice E).

============================================

另外,網路上不少人認為Supports/predominant(或diffuse)這組不錯:
~supports the assertion that the two movements were predominant(或diffuse)

vocabulary.com的解釋

assertion
An assertion is a declaration that's made emphatically, especially as part of an argument or as if(好像) it's to be understood as a statement of fact.

To assert is to state with force. So if someone makes an assertion, they’re not just trying out an idea — they really mean it. An assertion can also be an act that seems to make a statement without words. When your dog urinates in multiple places up and down your block, he's making an assertion of his dominance (also called "marking") over his "territory."

例句
1.But, despite many of the assertions made in “Everything that’s bad for you has been restricted, vilified or outlawed. What does this mean for candy?”
Washington Post

2.But the documentary “Plot for Peace” makes a bold assertion: that a mysterious Frenchman set into motion Mandela’s release and peace in South Africa.
Washington Post

3.If not, will they call on the President to identify and fire the persons making these assertions? Time Oct 30, 2014

4.That assertion struck many as something of a bloodless syllogism, more a rhetorical flourish than a patent reflection of reality. Slate Oct 30, 2014

5.“This evidence directly contradicts WiCFG’s assertions to the IRS that it operated primarily to advance social welfare and engaged in zero political activity.”
Washington Times Oct 28, 2014

6.A body of evidence raises questions about that assertion.
Washington Times Oct 28, 2014

7.For what it's worth, Trestman on Monday disputed the assertion that Bears defenders repeatedly allowed Gronkowski to release freely from the line of scrimmage. Chicago Tribune Oct 28, 2014

8.North Korea’s mission to the United Nations did not respond to requests for comment on Mr. Darusman’s assertions. New York Times Oct 28, 2014

Activist:

Greenpeace activists
temperance: n. ①節制(moderation in action, thought, or feeling)
②禁酒(moderation in or abstinence from the use of intoxicating
drink)

慣用語 assertion that
Wilkinson kept repeating his assertion that he was innocent .

The organization is large and diffuse.

underscore: v. 底下畫線(to draw a line under)
diffuse: adj. 彌漫的,散開的(not concentrated or localized)

undermines:(逐漸地)削弱to weaken or ruin by degrees
She tried to undermine his authority at every opportunity .
economic policies that threaten to undermine the health care system

inimical: adj.
his father's inimical glare(敵意的)
a cold , inimical climate
conditions inimical to economic development

predominant: adj.
the predominant group in society
