Modern Management Expert
Peter Drucker Dies at 95

A WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE NEWS ROUNDUP
November 11, 2005 7:40 p.m.

Peter F. Drucker, revered as the father of modern management for his numerous books and articles stressing innovation, entrepreneurship and strategies for dealing with a changing world, died Friday, a spokesman for Claremont Graduate University said.

Mr. Drucker died of natural causes at his home in Claremont, east of Los Angeles, said spokesman Bryan Schneider. Mr. Drucker was 95 years old.

Mr. Drucker invented management -- not as a practice, but as a field of study. It was he who first asked managers to decentralize their operations and treat their employees like humans -- in the 1940s. The concept of "knowledge work" is his coinage, from the 1950s.

His motivational techniques were used by executives at some of the biggest companies in corporate America, including Intel Corp. and Sears, Roebuck & Co.

Business Week magazine has hailed Mr. Drucker as "the most enduring management thinker of our time,'' and Forbes magazine featured him on its cover in 1997 under the headline: "Still the Youngest Mind." He was dubbed by Wired magazine as the "arch-guru of capitalism."

He grew up in Vienna, studied finance, and went to work as a newspaper reporter. In 1939 the first of his more than 30 books, "The End of Economic Man," also became his first bestseller when Winston Churchill hailed it publicly. A short time later, as a professor at Bennington College in Vermont, he spent two years observing General Motors Corp. from the inside. The resulting books, called "The Concept of the Corporation," cemented his reputation a management theorist and his career as a consultant to major corporations.

Mr. Drucker often decried out-of-whack executive compensation; in his view, CEOs must lead by example, and that isn't possible when they are grossly overpaid. In mid-2002, President Bush awarded Mr. Drucker the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award the government can bestow.

In a 1999 Wall Street Journal opinion piece, Joan Magretta and Nan Stone wrote: "Before Peter Drucker, most people thought about their businesses with a manufacturing mindset, defining a business based on what it produced. Today, the marketing mindset prevails. It was Mr. Drucker's critical insight that instead of buying a 'product' the customer buys the satisfaction of a need."
