That's true. If you don't have a decent 1st semester GPA + a 700+ GMAT, chances are that you won't even be selected for interview.

Yes, in McKinsey, it is one of the evlauation dimension of your acedemic performance. If you have high GPA or dean list in top B-school, also can get the same "bonus" in resume screen.
