(1) Career Service and internship: (They very similar so I will answer in one section.)
Most of the students come here with a goal of becoming an entrepreneur someday; therefore, people here are emphasizing the resources the school provides to help students launching their business. There are also many business plan competitions and business idea pitching that are presenting to venture capitalists. As a result, there tend to be more focus on meeting with venture capitalists.
However, we do have Center of Career Development (CCD). Each of us is signed with a career relation manager. S/he helps us with resumes, profiles and finds the companies that we are interested in. They are also responsible for bringing in internship/post-graduate opportunities. I can’t remember all the companies that they bring in this year but here is what I can remember: Reebok, Ocean Spray Cranberry, Fidelity, Mass Mutual, IBM, Lindt & Sprungli, Arnold Advertising, The Home Depot, Intel….and many other consulting companies. We also have Global Management Program that offers oversea internship opportunities.
Like in other MBA programs, CCD brings in companies but do not guarantee you a job since you will have to compete with all the Babson MBA students. Everyone has equal opportunities so it depends on the competition. The school also offers a lot of networking opportunities and mentoring programs to enhance the career searching opportunities. There are many resources and different channels that work for different people.
In short, yes, the CCD helps you look for internship right when you get into Babson and yes, most of the students get internships in the summer.
2. 您信中有提到Babson is the number one MBA program for women. 請問這個Center for Women's Leadership 主要是在做什麼的呢? 可否大概介紹一下this center
(2) Center of Woman Leadership:
This is a center that promotes women leadership by providing mentoring program and brings in many outstanding women leaders to network and share experience with students (we have speech events every other week). People look at it in different ways. I find it inspiring in developing my career goal and leadership skills. Others find it useful for networking and finding jobs. However, this is not a center that offers you jobs; rather it offers you opportunities to meet and network with successful women.
4. 請問在Boston的生活費是否真的"非常"貴呢? 請問大概一年total 學費+生活費大概需要多少錢呢?
(3) Living expense:
Well, it really depends which city you are comparing with. If you compare Boston with Arizona and mid west cities, sure Boston is very expensive. The living standard here is similar to that of Washington DC, Seattle or any other big cities. However, it is a little bit cheaper than New York. As for the real living expense, again, it depends on your life style, I think the number you see on the website is average housing and tuition. It’s pretty realistic.
5. 請問Boston的就業機會多嗎? 當然我知道競爭一定相當激烈, 因為有Harvard, MIT, BU, BC...etc, 想請問以往Babson的台灣畢業生都是留在美國? or 回台灣/亞洲? Babson 在台灣的已畢業生大概有幾位呢? 大概從事哪種產業及職務性質呢?
(4) Job opportunity in Boston:
You are right. It is very competitive. Moreover, it depends on which industry you are in. In Boston, there are more offers for financial service and IT than consumer products. As for school concerns, of course you will have to compete with Harvard and MIT; however, since Babson has the competitive advantage in entrepreneurship, many companies find that they prefer using Babson students. Again, it depends on how you position yourself and which industry you are interested in. In fact, sometimes you will find that you are at a better position than students from other schools because of the differentiation position you will have.
(5) Alumni:
You are right; there are not many Taiwanese students here. This year, there are four Taiwanese students and last year there were two. I did not try to contact the alumni in Taiwan; therefore, I don’t know how many there are, who they are and where they are. However, I have heard that most of them are either entrepreneurs or in financial service (ex. Fidelity). I also know some Chinese students who are working in Boston are mostly in financial service industry. I am sorry; I am not able to give you more information at this point. I do know that as entrepreneurship is becoming more and more important, many consulting and venture capital companies in Taiwan are looking for talents from this field.
Babson does not promote its reputation in Taiwan because it does not follow the tradition of the MBA tour. Rather, it focuses on what it does the best and attracts entrepreneurial people. The program is small compare with other programs; therefore, the network you built will be tighter and stronger here. I find it more beneficial for me this way.
Most of the students find it more beneficial to come to visit the school before making decisions; I do know it is very far from Taiwan but it is the best way to decide.
5. 請問你覺得Babson的課程你覺得最特別的是哪方面呢? 是否有哪方面是你覺得特別值得向我介紹的呢?
(Ok, I think Babson should pay me now because I feel like a sales representative of Babson!!-Just kidding).
Core MBA program:
highly integrated. We take integrated classes and exams (ex. The cost accounting is tightly connected with operating management; therefore, the exam is one case doing both analysis.- It’s like in the real world and if you work hard, you will definitely get the full picture of the business issues.-I heard this is only done in Babson.) We have individual exam and group exams-it’s kinda cool!
Babson Consulting Alliance Program:
compulsory group consulting project for companies in different industries according to your interests. You have a client for serve and one presentation each semester. With the project, you use whatever you learn right away. I am sure you are a professional in your field but by doing the project with people from different countries and industries, you can learn a lot from each other. Most importantly, if you want to work for the company for your internship, it is a good connection.
Creativity Project: integration of creativity to the MBA program. Push you out your comfort zone and make you think outside of the boxè It’s fun!
MCFE:
2nd year consulting project-semester long. You can chose your own team and work on the specific project and company you are interested in.
BCF:
Babson college Fund (2nd year elective): If you are interested in finance, this is the program that there is a fund for you to invest in the financial market. (Students chosen should be very committed to the program because they are supposed to earn money for the fund but not lose it.
EIT:
For people who already have business ideas. This is a program that will push you and help you launch your business during your stay in Babson.
Hatchery:
For people who win the business idea pitch-the school will provide an office for you to start your project while you are here.
Many many business plan competitions with Venture capitalists coming to give you ideas and opportunities to launch your business if you win.
GMP: in your next question.
Study trips to China, EU, India, Chili, Russia and Brazil. (most schools have this I guess)
Oh, yes, TechMark:
A 3 day business simulation competition right after you start the program at Babson. I don’t want to tell you the details because I don’t want to spoil your fun but you will learn a lot about yourself, strength and area of improvement. (I love Tech Mark.)
Well…there are much more but the above is a list on the top of my head right now. (Sorry just finish my final exam and part of my head is resting right now.)
6. 我看課程中第二年有一個Global Management Program, 這個有何特別之處呢? 我有上網站大略看過了,可否請您更加詳細的讓我了解一下關於這個program呢? 是每個學生都一定要參加的嗎? or是選修的?
GMP:
I am in GMP; this is optional. It is an opportunity for you to get an internship outside of USA but first, you have to apply and be accepted to be in the GMP pool. The GMP manager will find opportunities and offer them to the students in the GMP pool. Then, everyone in the pool can apply and will have telephone interview. After that, you will see if you are accepted. (Most of the people in the pool get their internship in the end.)
This summer, I am going to India and work for one of the biggest conglomerates in India doing real estate development strategy for them. I will not be very well paid (because it’s an internship) but all my living expenses and my flight fare are covered. It is considered as a 3-credit course so you do have to pay for the credits.
I have to say…I love Babson! That’s why I am spreading my good experience to whoever is interested in coming to study, This is an elite school and has specific business focus. I wanted to be entrepreneurial because it is good both in the corporate environment or in my own start-up (in the future). Therefore, my philosophy was learning with the best (yes, we won the first prize of entrepreneurship MBA program again!). I think this is the best decision I have ever made. What can I say…Welcome to Babson!
