[分享]UIUC對求職一問的回應

文章GoldDigger » 2005-04-13 00:26

我寫信詢問UIUC對國際學生於MSF program找工作的問題,
沒想到他回了好多~~ ;yes;
每次寫信詢問,就會立刻回應,態度積極好到不行呢!!

Hi,

I am the prospective student of MSF.

I was referred by Hanafin, Jaimee and have some questions about the employment information.

1. Is there a record about the employment rate at graduation of MSF in recent years?

2. What can International Career Services offer me?

Is there any information besides those I can find at http://www.business.uiuc.edu/bcs/ ?

3. I am interested in banking industry. Do you have a list of banking recruiters in recent years?

4. Actually I heard that it is quite difficult for an international MSF student to find a job in U.S.

I would like to hear some opinions from you.

i am pleased to hear that you are considering attending the University of Illinois and specifically the Master of Science in Finance Program. I am a member of the Business Career Services team, and I work with students in the MS in Accountancy, Business Administration and Finance programs.

The Business Career Services webpage http://www.business.uiuc.edu/bcs/ offers general information on the career services available in the College of Business. We currently utilize COMPASS, by Symplicity, to manage the on-campus recruiting process. Our recruiting goes on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year via this web-based system. However, to have an account and full access to the list of companies coming on campus, you must be a registered University of Illinois student. It is generally understood that most students obtaining professional (MS and MBA) degrees ultimately find employment through networking; on-campus recruiting is one component of networking. During Fall On-Campus Recruiting, 66 companies accepted resumes of MSF students for positions for which on-campus interviews were held, and through &Job Postings* on COMPASS an additional 96 companies accepted resumes from MSF students for positions for which interviews would be held off-campus.

Students in the MSF program have in previous years all been international students, who seek employment in their home countries as it is difficult for international students to find companies who are willing to sponsor an adjustment of the student's immigration status to H-1 (which would allow the student to remain in the U.S. for employment purposes). Most international students have stayed in the U.S. for a period of time following graduation to seek employment. While some students have been successful in securing U.S.-based employment, most realize that being employed in their home countries is the best match of a student*s capabilities and the employer*s needs. For international students, seeking U.S.-based employment is a long process and one that requires fluency in American English (including non-verbal communication), and time and dedication. The student needs to be very focused on exactly what industry and which organizations are of interest, and specific roles the student is interested in taking on. Banks are extremely complex organizations, and students need to thoroughly understand the organization and be able to articulate where the student wants to work.

Beyond employment authorization, the next issue is generally the prior work experience you bring to your career search. Employers recruiting for entry-level positions generally seek students directly out of undergraduate studies, i.e. those having relevant summer internships but no full-time work experience. Students who are returning to school for a master*s degree and who have significant work experience will be considered by employers as &experienced hires*. Typically, employers do not come to campus to interview candidates for &experienced hires* positions. Rather, candidates contact employers, based on results of the research a candidate conducts to support an individual career search. While applying for employment via an employer*s website is typically required, the applicants who are hired are those who targeted the industry and the company and made personal contacts with current employees in that company. The University of Illinois Business and Economics Library has resources through which you can very effectively conduct career-search research. The professional staff at the Business and Economics Library are second to none!

You asked about the employment rate at graduation. I can honestly tell you that most students have not made the time required to conduct a career search during the MSF program. Successful career searches are based on making contacts, which takes a great deal of time. And, some students are not clear on exactly what career direction they want to pursue until they have finished the program. Consequently, there are relatively few students who have accepted offers of employment at the time of graduation. Once students complete classes (and, in some cases, sit for the CFA exam) and begin to focus on their career searches they are very successful. MSF students from recent graduating classes are currently employed with organizations such as Accenture, Cargill, Citigroup, DBS Vickers Securities (Thailand) Co., Deloitte, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Ferguson Enterprises, Frank Russell Company, GE Capital Management, Hsin-Chu International Commercial Bank, Industrial Bank of Taiwan, Johnson Diversey, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Resource Trading Group, Robert Bosch Corporation, Samsung Life Insurance Co., United Air Credit Union, United Online, Inc.

To prepare for your career search, I would advise you to research the positions you aim to be considered for when you complete the MSF program. Try to talk to people in these positions, and see what information you can gather from them about what academic and work experience they had when applying for the position, how they got the position, what skills they use in the position, what their employer currently looks for in candidates, and so on. The information you gather, and the contacts you make through this process, will be very helpful to you now and during your career search.

I do not have a list of banking recruiters who have come to campus in recent years. Most of the well-known banks recruit University of Illinois students, but keep in mind that they come to campus to recruit students for entry-level positions, and they generally hire undergraduate students (receiving Bachelor of Science degrees) for entry-level positions. When they are on campus, however, MSF students have ample opportunities to meet their representatives (typically employees who graduated from the University of Illinois and have 3-5 years* work experience in the organization) and inquire about career opportunities for individuals with your unique backgrounds.

Another very good source of contacts is through the MSF program guest speakers series. Students who are seeking employment should attend every single lecture to learn what they can about an industry, company and current issues in that industry. Perhaps the speaker is not from a bank, but surely something you hear in the lecture will be useful as you talk to people while searching for employment. Employers are looking for well-rounded candidates who also have a specialization, so take advantage of every opportunity to meet people and learn something while you are on campus.

I hope this is helpful information, and explains how Business Career Services can help you. As the adviser to MSF students I meet with each student individually, at the student*s request, to assist the student in the career search process. If you have other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me. I will be glad to help you as much as I can.

Warmest regards,
