Buffalo
Dear Mr. Yudaiway,
I am very sorry for this situation. The very direct explanation is
that
there was a clerical error in a database system that automatically
generated
the acceptance letter and, when the mistake was realized, the correct
designation was entered based on the admission committee deliberation
that
took place on Thursday, April 6, 2006.
The committee decision was based on your GMAT verbal score at the 21st
percentile, and a poorly written admissions essay. My staff politely
asked
you to wait until I returned to the office today (Monday, April 10)
since I
was in New York City on business last Friday. You emailed all the
staff and
the Dean, and posted your complaint on the discussion board. I believe
your
follow up was very immature and short-sighted - when you had been asked
to
please wait for my investigation into the situation.
When the admissions committee makes a decision it attempts to do so
with the
best interests of the applicant in mind. Very honestly, based on your
verbal score and essay, the committee believes that your prospects for
successfully completing the program are lower than they were willing to
risk. Some schools expect a 20% drop-out rate. Ours typically runs
under
5%. We do not believe it is fair to admit students who we think will
have
to leave the program after they have gone through a lot of trouble and
expense to travel to the U.S. and paid a full year of tuition and
living
expenses.
In light of the situation I will try to work with you, since you say
you
have rejected admission offers from other schools already.
We have serious concerns about your language skills based on the GMAT
score.
However, if you are willing to attend the 6-week ESL program at UB,
beginning on June 28, 2006, we will then allow you to join the MBA
program.
If you agree to this condition we will process paperwork for the MBA
program, but if you do not attend and complete the ESL IEP program the
admission will be revoked.
See details of the ESL program at:
http://wings.buffalo.edu/eli/eli_iep.htm
Please let me know what you would like to do.
Again, please accept my apologies for this unfortunate situation, but
understand that when processing hundreds of records an occasional error
slips in.
Thank you,
Dave
