The majority of students…are..
the number of students in this room is ten→the number有總數的意思
字典上例句:the majority of doctors believe smoking is harmful…

如果有其他the N1 of N2...V1

all of the students
some of the students
part of the students
20% of the students

the number of 指的是"數字"
ex: the number of students is increasing
the majority of students are smart. "大部分學生"很聰明
我行,就任我行 !

我今天遇到了一題PP3也是關於這類的問題 問題如下:

According to two teams of paleontologists, recent fossil discoveries in Pakistan show that whales, porpoises, and dolphins are more closely related to some of the oldest known even-toed ungulates -- a group of hoofed mammals that today includes cows, camels, pigs, and hippos--than to any other mammals.
(A)that whales, porpoises, and dolphins are more closely related to some of the oldest known even-toed ungulates -- a group of hoofed mammals that today includes cows, camels, pigs, and hippos--than
(B)that whales, porpoises, and dolphins are more closely related to some of the oldest known even-toed ungulates -- a group of hoofed mammals that today include cows, camels, pigs, and hippos--as
(C)whales, porpoises, and dolphins to be more closely related to some of the oldest known even-toed ungulates -- a group of hoofed mammals that today include cows, camels, pigs, and hippos--than they are
(D)whales, porpoises, and dolphins as being more closely related to some of the oldest known even-toed ungulates -- a group of hoofed mammals that today includes cows, camels, pigs, and hippos--as they are
(E)whales, porpoises, and dolphins as more closely related to some of the oldest known even-toed ungulates -- a group of hoofed mammals that today include cows, camels, pigs, and hippos--than

這題我想了好久 本來覺得 a group of hoofed mammals that today includes cows, camels, pigs, and hippos

例: a group of trees are tall←其中tree是are 的主詞,a group of 修飾tree
the majority of doctors believe smoking is harmful..
←其中the majority 是被 of doctors修飾,the majority 是believe的主詞

a mumber of (=several)也是一組的
a number of visitors came to the meeting
the number of chairs is 10←of chairs 修飾the number

a group of + N + 單數動詞

238. According to a recent study by Rutgers University, the number of women in state legislatures has grown in every election since 1968.
(A) the number of women in state legislatures has grown
(B) the number of women who are in state legislatures have grown
(C) there has been growth in the number of women in state legislatures
(D) a growing number of women have been in state legislatures
(E) women have been growing in number in state legislatures

Choice A is best. The singular verb has agrees with the subject of the clause, the number. Moreover, A conveys the intended meaning concisely and unambiguously. In B, the grammatical subject of the clause is the number, not women, and so a singular verb is required--has rather than have. The phrase who are is unnecessary; it could be omitted without affecting the meaning of the sentence. In C, the use of the wordy passive construction there has been growth in for has grown is awkward and does not contribute to the meaning of the sentence. In D, a... number of women means a group of women, whereas the... number of women refers to an exact figure; the illogical suggestion is that a group of women has already been in place in every election, rather than that their total has grown as a result of each election. Choice E may be faulted for the awkwardness of in number in state legislatures in every election, as well as for weakening clarity by separating the modifying phrase in state legislatures from women.

A group of us are going to the theatre this evening.

看來還真是頭大 :||| 不過要我臨場決選 那還是以OG為依歸的啦... ;yes;

After determining the level of calcium carbonate and the types of fossilized algae present in core samples taken from the bottom of Lake Titicaca in the Andes, a group of scientists was able to reconstruct the history of precipitation in tropical South America over the past 25,000 years.

(A) the types of fossilized algae present in core samples taken from the bottom of Lake Titicaca in the Andes, a group of scientists was able
(B)the types of fossilized algae that are present in core samples taken from the bottom of Lake Titicaca in the Andes, it was possible for a group of scientists
(C)the types of fossilized algae that had been present in core samples taken from the bottom of Lake Titicaca in the Andes, that made it possible for a group of scientists
(D)what types of fossilized algae had been present in core samples taken from the bottom of Lake Titicaca in the Andes, it was possible for a group of scientists
(E)what the types of fossilized algae were that were present in core samples taken from the bottom of Lake Titicaca in the Andes, a group of scientists was able

Ans: A

重點是要說明 a group of scientists + was
a group of 複N + 單V
