Can someone tell me why the answer is "C" instead of "B" ? What is "they" referring to ??? thanks.

Did you see "in any previous election"?
It imply you to use perfect tense.

well...just what I said...there are two files, one is "key" and the other is "my key", they have different answer for Q16. My original answer is "B". So I'm confused loh @@

坦白說
這題原本是選錯的，但我即便是告訴我答案是C(我知道是c)，我還是不太能接受C
我還是覺得B似乎較好，理由是既然前半段己經比較過了Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992，也就是TV costs accounted for 比　the spending （accounted for）in the presidential campaign。
那麼後半段a greater proportion than it was in any previous election，可視為同位語或是加強語氣
還原原句該是a greater proportion than (other proportion/that)　in previous election.
換句話說，若是有選項是a great proportion than that in previous election，絕對是標準答案，可惜本題沒有這種答案，但我認為B還是優於C

另外，in previous election，這樣的時間副詞要接完成式嗎？
而且是接被動語態的完成式嗎，我覺得怪怪的，請繼續討論

我個人認為舊的訊息的確是可以省略的....

再加上今天老莫給我們又上了比較要同類規則的補充...時間也可以視為比較的條件之一....time as an unit of comparison

我們在這題看到「Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.」除了more than的比較之外還有前後動詞時態要一致.....

也就是說藍色的accounted動詞1和畫線部份的動詞時態要一致...

但是先發生的動作可以用完成式....後發生的動作可以用現在式.....

然而動詞1accounted是過去式...所以動詞2的時態是過去完成式或是跟動詞1一致才對

所以我覺得這題應該是B而且又簡潔....

請大家指教....

我不太懂你說的動詞一要和動詞二一致
你是說，至少要had been而非C選項的have been?
如果真是had been，那B是不該省略的呀。

我的意思是說......比較的平衡可以選擇：

1.前後比較的動詞時態一致

or

2.先發生的動作時態用完成式﹐後發生的用簡單式。

所以可以省略是因為當它採用時態一致的規則時(老莫還強調說美國人特別喜歡前後時態一致這條規則).....

類似題目請參照OG-81,134,188

若以上這幾題有問題可以再進行討論.....

Hi Illuna,

I agree with your explainaiton that the verb tense should be in parrel:
the past tense " ac counted for" should be verse the past perfect tense "they had been" instead of present perfect-- " they have been". Hence, I agree that answer C could not be correct. But, answer B, I doubit its accuracy. I will consult our SC teacher, and get back with a convincing explaination. ;)

and support that <B> is the correct one.
