rate 指的是一樣東西的比率，不可以用as fast as 形容
只有速度 velocity 才可以用 as fast as 形容
這一個概念好像看過蠻多次的

我個人認為
two and a half times faster than previously thought是形容詞片語修飾前面的at a rate of 39 square miles a year的 rate，所以不用在two之前補回rate。然後因為比較的名詞相同，than後面就省略rate。還原就變成: ...two and a half times faster than (rate which was) prevously thought

我想不透為什麼C比D好, C中faster than明顯改變原本as fast as的句意
看了你post的概念後，好像比較了解為什麼C較好了

你的意思是不是C的fastern than 是當副詞修飾vanishing而不是rate?
