Hi,
At first glance, you scores and experiences are good enough to give you a shot at top 30 schools. Seeing how you write and think, I get the sense that you are also very thoughtful and curious, good qualities for making your application package attractive to admission committees.
I have added my comments to your questions below, see English in ( ).
W/E 2 year IT consulting firm
2 year military service
(You are not alone, most MBA candidates are not 100% sure about what they want out of the experience. what they are sure about is that they want more out of their career and life. My husband started just like you when he started applying in 2002, after many many hours of answering those “what is your career goal” essay questions, you will be forced to reflect on yourself and get more focused. Then, once you get into the program, you will again change your career goals since you will get exposed to the various “cool” career opportunities and just about all industries and functions. The great part is that you will come out with one job you like and get pay for it. What is more, your career will never be the same again, new doors will be opened, and you will view the world from a very different perspective… That is really the main reason that so many ambitious people pursue MBA.)
(your ex boss has a point. However, the system is really created and maintained by people; so culture is very important. In general though, there is a consent that a successful business need a good system and, most importantly, good people.)
(your motive is fine and a top mba program will at the least offer you this chance—provide you with a good position in a company. From my experience, the key world here is “top”. There are only so many good companies and positions; top recruiters mostly go to the “top” schools to recruit. If you don’t believe me, log onto schools’ websites and see which company shows up, and more importantly, how many students the top companies recruit from there. Here are some links to give you an idea; while some schools post how many students, a key info, get hired at each company, most just advertise the names of the top recruiters. Another info which I can not post here is the quantity and quality of continues job postings at each school’s career database since it is only available for alumni. “top” programs have so much more and good job opennings for their students. And lastly, we all know the importance of networking; graduates from the top schools get tremendous help from their alumni. Of course, this is given that most other skills of the candidates being equal.)

(if you are interested in IT, look at each program’s IT employer, so on for marketing, operations. There are usually some consensus on program strength, ie. Wharton/Columbia—finance, Kellogg/Michigan—Marketing, HBS/Stanford—general management… a little stereotyping but true to certain degree)
(Again, you are not alone. Public info is a great place to start but if you want to learn/feel more of each program, feel free to contact the alumni of the schools of your interest. You will be surprised how willing people are to share with you their experiences and reflections.
(b school is expen$ive. But have no fear, once you are in, school will help you to secure loans because the banks believe that you will be able to pay them back. Loans range from 15 to 20 years. In general, you will need about $80,000-100,000 USD for tuition, fees, and living expenses for the 2 years. Most students will take out on average of $60,000 USD and that is about $400-500 USD per month of payment (depending on interest rate and exchange rates) afterwards. Foreign students really made out good during the past few years with USD depreciation.)
(good luck and feel free to ask more questions)
