Yale MBA 1st year taking questions

各位好：

我是目前Yale SOM MBA一年級的學生，如果有人想多了解這個課程，歡迎在版上提問，或直接發信給我 mingyujiang at gmail.com，我會儘我所知答覆關於學校課程與校園生活相關的問題。今年入學學生只有我直接從台灣過來，加上大陸和香港和在美國長大或工作的華人或華裔，總共約16位，佔總人數約8%。

請不要叫我比較其他MBA課程的優劣，因為我只念過一間，回答一定偏頗。也請別直接把個人資料丟給我，問我有沒有機會錄取。我如果這麼神準的話，就行李收一收回去開顧問公司囉！

關於維尼同學的疑問，如果要用一個字回答，應該是supportive。

絕大多數的同學都很好相處，開學以來的各種活動與study group，讓我有機會跟一部份同學變得比較熟，達到我一直想多了解不同文化的目的，也交到一些好朋友。系上老師大部份我都很欣賞，跟以前在台灣不太一樣的是，很多老師覺得學生上課聽不懂是老師的錯，所以會想盡辦法讓學生了解他想講的內容。

Isn't there a curriculum change that is undergoing sometimes in the near future, if not now? How do the students react to such a change? And can you talk about how does school plan on "inter-weave" various subjects-accounting, marketing, operation- together?

到目前我所聽到的，同學們都很支持這套課程，一部份的課是從原本的課轉型過來，其他是新的課。不同學科的整合主要會在case discussion中出現，例如討論某公司是否要進入一個新市場時，就可能會討論到目前公司表現、與競爭對手的關係、消費者的偏好等不同主題，自然會用到Accounting、Economics、Marketing、Strategy等不同概念。

8%我覺得應該算低，不過我手邊沒有數據可以比。學校網站好像只有Asian American加上Asian的資料，不會再細分國家。

我補充一些新課程裡面關於case study的改變。

系上今年配合新課程推出一些新的case，這些case不太像傳統的case只偏重finance或marketing，而是結合operational behavior的觀念，讓我們學習從不同的角度思考企業經營所遇到的問題。

今天上課剛好討論到一個新的case，是關於一家小型管理顧問公司的競爭策略，case中的主角公司的創辦人之一來到課堂上聽我們討論，也和我們分享他的做法與想法，讓我獲益良多。

Last year, SOM's accpetance rate is 28%, but the yield is only 37%, a very disappointing figure. This year's yield has rebounded to around 61%. Although no official data has been released about this year's acceptance rate, my calculation shows it should be around 16%~18%. Evidently, the admission is highly selective.

学生背景各种都有，并不是只有文科。有不少是做non profit或者以后想做non profit的。
不建议在第三轮申请。今年SOM只招150人，而第一轮就有800人申请，我估计第三轮机会很小。

I went to the D.C. Yale admission reception last night and learned some news regarding the 2009 class: SOM is admitting only 150 students this year due to 45 admitted students last year accepted offer to defer their admisson to 2007. The class size of 2009 will still maintain 190 to 200 in this way but it is a big challenge for us 2007 applicants
The first-round application deadline has passed. Compared to last year's 540 applicants, the number of first-round applicants this year has soared to around 800.

And our Admissions Office reports that by the October 25th deadline, the number of First Round applications for positions in the Class of 2009 increased by an astonishing 48% from last year. While it is still too soon to tell whether this increase in interest in the SOM MBA program will persist through the remaining two application rounds, it is a very encouraging signal." - Dean Podolny

根據CD上Yale students的說法
MBA 2009 預計招收190-200人
扣掉去年50個defered,有45個同意今年入學
預估今年招收人數大約150人左右

previous numbers of applicants:2000
estimated growth rate of numbers of applicants for MBA09: 50%
estimated numbers of applicants for MBA09: 3000
estimated yield rate for MBA09:60%

若要達到yield rate 60%
1.在只計算今年的150個入學者的情況下,今年大概要送出250個admission(150/0.6=250)
2.在合計去年50個deferred的情況下,則今年大概要送出290個admission(200/0.6=333,大約是330個,330-50=280)
estimated acceptance rate this year:8%~10%(250/3000=8.33% or 280/3000=9.33%)

當然上述的錄取率是建立在整體申請人數成長50%的條件下
如果成長幅度沒那麼大呢?假設今年申請人數為2500人好了,
estimated acceptance rate this year:10%~12%
(250/2500=10% or 280/2500=11.2%)

不然再假設申請人數還是2000人,第一輪的暴增只是虛晃的假象
estimated acceptance rate this year:12%~15%(250/2000=12.5% or 280/2000=14%)

那如果yield rate沒那麼高呢?
我想TOP B-chool都希望high yield rate吧?!
若是以yield rate of TOP 10 大約50%推算
綜合各種最有利的條件,錄取率大概是17.5%

我想,今年申請Yale的比往年都高,大家要有心理準備
這是Yale為了更好所帶來的磨合,期待浴火重生的Yale!

謝謝nexxt0722的估算，雖然我不完全同意以上所有的假設，不過我覺得這些結果數據的範圍相當合理。

我個人認為整體錄取率會忽略個別申請者的差異，像是不同教育背景、工作資歷、人格特質等；申請學校不比買樂透，每位申請者之於每間學校的錄取率各不相同，所以我想各位不需要擔心錄取率。

不如多想想如何突顯個人特色，讓學校捨不得不錄取你。

Haven't seen much update on this thread, so I thought I would ask some more questions to get the interest going =)

1. Yale is known for its non-profit focus. Does this affect the mindset or worldly perspective of the students?

2. I also read somewhere that Yale has a strong finance program with a bunch of prominent alumni with in the hedge fund industry. Is there a large representation of students who are interested in working for a HF upon graduation? Is so, are they able to satisfy their career aspiration?

Thank you for these great questions.

1. Yale SOM has gained the reputation in non-profit management because some of our faculties are highly respected in this field. Consequentially, there is a certain percentage of SOM students coming from non-profit background, or having high interest in this field. I would say non-profit management is one of the major focuses of SOM and it helps to broaden our view of business and society. I have learned the common characteristics of non-profit organizations, just as I have learned the basic concepts in Finance and Marketing.

2. Roughly one-third of first-year students are interested in Private Equity/Hedge Fund, or in a broader sense, in Investment Management. I am not particularly familiar with this field but I know related student clubs are very active and have a variety of events to approach potential recruiters. Our career office also has a strong connection with alums and companies in related fields.
