Never say you have great analytical skills?

Hi Guys,

Just read an article saying "you should avoid claiming you have great analytical skills in an essay." Therefore, I have a question for current MBAs and admitted students: according to your experience, do you think this is really an issue? Or did you simply replace "great analytical skills" with something else such as "quant discipline, ...etc" ???

I would think that "having a great analytical skill" is a general claim that is not very convincing without solid examples. Instead of claimng that you have a great analytical skills, include an concrete example using SAR (Situation, Action, Result) to show that you have a great set of analytical skills.

Quant skills, on the other hand, is something that can be easily shown through GMAT, coursework, or your background. Although quant is important, I wouldn't waste too much essay space emphasizing it.

superior analytical skills need to be demostrated by the scope of work at spcific analysist position such as senior market researcher or senior financial analysist with at least 5-yr experience. Mass quantitative skills with certain extent of financial basis may consist the claim. Proven performances are also required such as providing big boys like P&G or IBM analytical intelligence for further strategic decision making purpose.

I think it's not that complicated. If you have truly great analytical skills, you should be able to show it ithrough the writing n the essays with the insightful comments you make.
