1. Don't get "buried" in details. Remember all passages, conversations, and lecutures follow some patterns of structures.
Eg. Campus Conversation: stating a problem -> details of the problem -> alternative solutions to the problem -> taking an action
Lecture: subject A -> details of A-> subject B -> details of B -> comparing A to B
If you are well aware of the structure throughout your reading or listening, you can weed out trivial specifics.
2. Build vocabulary. This is most crucial for science lectures. Make sure to memorize words on scientific topics so that you won't get panic when listening to an unfamiliar topic. Listening to Discovery Channel would also "expose" your ears to these words.
3. Practice. The more you practice, you become more familiar with the structures the materials are presented and you may also instinctly know what kinds questions will be asked.
Cheers,
