3/29 JJ from the South Pacific

文章johnjwwjd » 2007-03-29 08:51

Hi all,

Well, originally I have decided not to write a JJ, especially with all the NN pple online with higher scores & better exam advice then me. But, I do feel like I owe something to both CD and BHC, without which I could not have found the strength to tackle both preparation and the exam itself again for the fourth time. Also I know how it feels to be up at 3am the night before exams >< trying to memorise the latest JJ online (and hoping there is a JJ of the day before). And yes....guilty as charged, I was stupid enough to stay up til 4am bfore my exam (end up falling asleep in the exam ><!).

So anyway I am putting this up just in case your exam date is right after mine/or on the same day!! ^^ We are officially 4hrs ahead of Taiwan now, after NZDT. This is a broad skeleton of the structure, will post the in depth details later on this afternoon, after I wake up, ha.

“Throughout the last two decades, those who earned graduate degrees found it very difficult to get jobs teaching their academic specialties at the college level. Those with graduate degrees from Waymarsh University had an especially hard time finding such jobs. But better times are coming in the next decade for all academic job seekers, including those from Waymarsh. Demographic trends indicate that an increasing number of people will be reaching college age over the next ten years; consequently, we can expect that the job market will improve dramatically for people seeking college-level teaching positions in their fields.”

Math. Perhaps it was because maths is so bad here, as there is almost no questions from the JJ!!! Or I maybe have stuffed up in the first 15 Q and so got into the 'low score questions' zone... T T

AWA it was hilarious, it is just not meant for people to type that fast. I have been writing journals & essays for over half of my life, and I still have to bust my ass to type all that crap down. Certainly, gmac does have a great sense of humour, twisted as it may be.

Well Im off to bed, cant keep my eyes open anymore. Will update all the exam details asap, I promise!!! For those sitting this arvo or tomorrow morning. GL & HW ^^, may the 'G' force b with you.

Brasailian Women status GWD-22
GWD30-Q22 to Q25:
While acknowledging that
there are greater employment
opportunities for Latin Ameri-
Line can women in cities than in the
(5) countryside, social science
theorists have continued to
argue that urban migration
has unequivocally hurt
women’s status. However,
(10) the effects of migration are
more complex than these
theorists presume. For
example, effects can vary
depending on women’s
(15) financial condition and social
class. Brazilian women in the
lowest socioeconomic class
have relatively greater job
opportunities and job security
(20) in cities than do men of the
same class, although there is
no compelling evidence that
for these women the move to
the city is a move out of pov-
(25) erty. Thus, these women
may improve their status in
relation to men but at the
same time may experience
no improvement in their
(30) economic standing.
In addition, working out-
side the home, which is more
common in urban than in rural
areas, helps women in the
(35) lowest socioeconomic class
make contacts to extend
exchange networks—the flow
of gifts, loans, or child care
from those who currently
(40) have access to resources
to those who do not. More-
over, poor women working in
urban areas actively seek to
cultivate long-term employer-
(45) employee relations. When
an emergency arises that
requires greater resources
than an exchange network
can provide, these women
(50) often appeal for and receive
aid from their wealthy employ-
ers. However, the structure
of many poor women’s
work—often a labor force
(55) of one in an employer’s
home—makes it difficult for
them to organize to improve
their economic conditions in
general.
(60) Not surprisingly, then,
Latin American women in the
lowest socioeconomic class
differ in their opinions about
the effects of urban migration
(65) on their lives. Some find
urban living, with access to
electricity and running water,
an improvement and would
never return to the country-
(70) side. Others, disliking the
overcrowding and crime,
would return to the country-
side if there were work
opportunities for them there.
(75) Thus, urban life has had both
negative and positive impacts
on women’s lives. In gen-
eral, urban migration has not
provided economic pros-
(80) perity or upward mobility for
women in the lowest socio-
economic class, despite their
intelligent and energetic utili-
zation of the resources
available to them.

Q22:
In the first paragraph, the author refers to the experiences of Brazilian women most probably in order to

A. support an earlier assertion made by social science theorists about the effects of urban migration
B. provide an example of one area in which urban migration has failed to improve Latin American women’s lives
C. substantiate the claim that the effects of urban migration cannot be easily characterized比A更具体.
D. illustrate the effect that urban migration has had on the economic status of Latin American women
E. compare the effect that urban migration has had on the economic status of Latin American women with its effect on the economic status of Latin American men
Answer:

Q23:
NOTE: You must scroll to read the answer choices for this question.

Which of the following best summarizes the main point of the passage?

A. Although Latin American women disagree about the effects urban migration has had on their lives, they agree that migration has provided them with greater opportunities for stable employment outside the home.
B. Although urban migration has improved the quality of life for Latin American women, it has weakened the social support systems that these women enjoyed in rural communities.
C. The effects that urban migration has had on Latin American women’s lives are complex and are best evaluated in light of a range of issues concerning Latin American women’s overall quality of life.
D. The effects of urban migration in Latin America are different for men than they are for women because of the relatively greater job opportunities and job security enjoyed by women in urban areas.
E. Urban migration has led to an increasing disparity between the economic prosperity of Latin American women in the lowest socioeconomic classes and that of women in the higher socioeconomic classes.
Answer:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q24:
The author mentions which of the following as a disadvantage of urban employment for Latin American women in the lowest socioeconomic group?

A. It is difficult for these women to obtain reliable, long-term employment.
B. It is difficult for these women to organize effectively in order to obtain better wages.
C. It is difficult for these women to find employers who are supportive when emergencies arise.
D. The structure of their jobs makes it difficult for these women to participate in exchange networks.
E. Working in urban areas makes these women more vulnerable to health problems than they would be in rural areas.
Answer:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q25:
The author of the passage would most likely agree that the opinions of the Latin American women discussed in the third paragraph (lines 60-85) are influenced by the信息题

A. fact that urban life has provided them with greater opportunities for upward mobility than did rural life
B. relative importance they place on the benefits of urban exchange networks in comparison to those of rural networks.
C. relative importance they place on the conveniences and drawbacks of urban life in comparison to those of rural life
D. difference in the effects of urban migration on women of higher and lower socioeconomic classes
E. difference in the effects of urban migration on men and women of the same social and economic class

Pheromones GWD-22

GWD 26-Q7 to Q9
There is no consensus among
researchers regarding what qualifies a
substance as a pheromone. While most
Line agree on a basic definition of pheromones
(5) as chemicals released by one individual
of a species which, when detected by
another individual of the same species,
elicit a specific behavioral or physiological
response, some researchers also specify
(10) that the response to pheromones must be
unconscious. In addition, the distinction
between pheromones and odorants—
chemicals that are consciously detected
as odors---can be blurry, and some
(15) researchers classify pheromones as a
type of odorant. Evidence that pheromone
responses may not involve conscious odor
perception comes from the finding that in
many species, pheromones are processed
(20) by the vomeronasal (or accessory olfactory)
system, which uses a special structure in
the nose, the vomeronasal organ (VNO),
to receive chemical signals. The neural
connections between the VNO and the
(25) brain are separate from those of the main
olfactory system, whose processing of
odorants triggers sensations of smell. But
while the VNO does process many animal
pheromone signals, not all animal phero-
(30) mones work through the VNO. Conversely,
not all chemical signals transmitted via the
VNO quality as pheromones. For example,
garter snakes detect a chemical signal from
earthworms—one of their favorite foods—via
(35) the VNO, and they use this signal to track
their prey.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q7
It can be inferred from the passage that in classifying pheromones as a type of odorant, the researchers referred to in line 15 posit that 信息题
A. pheromones are perceived consciously
B. most pheromones are processed by the VNO
C. most chemical signals processed by the VNO are pheromones
D. Pheromone perception does not occur exclusively between members of the same species.
E. pheromones do not always elicit a specific behavioral or physiological response
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q8
According to the passage, the fact that pheromones are processed by the VNO in many animal species has been taken as evidence of which of the following?细节题
A. The accessory and main olfacTory systems are not separate
B. Odorants and pheromones are not distinct types of chemicals.
C. Odorants and pheromones both elicit a specific behavioral response.
D. Pheromones do not trigger conscious sensations of smell.
E. Pheromones aid animals in tracking prey.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q9
The primary purpose of the passage is to主题题,错选D
A. compare and contrast the ways in which the vomeronasal organ and the main olfactory systern process chemicals.
B. summarize the debate over the role the vomeronasal organ plays in odor perception
C. present some of the issues involved in the debate over what constitutes a pheromone
D. propose a new definition of pheromones based on recent research
E. argue that pheromones should be classified as a type of odorant

The irradiation of food kills bacteria and thus retards spoilage. However, it also lowers the nutritional value of many foods. For example, irradiation destroys a significant percentage of whatever vitamin B1 a food may contain. Proponents of irradiation point out that irradiation is no worse in this respect than cooking. However, this fact is either beside the point, since much irradiated food is eaten raw, or else misleading, since _______.

A. many of the proponents of irradiation are food distributors who gain from food’s having a longer shelf life
B. it is clear that killing bacteria that may be present on food is not the only effect that irradiation has
C. cooking is usually the final step in preparing food for consumption, whereas irradiation serves to ensure a longer shelf life for perishable foods
D. certain kinds of cooking are, in fact, even more destructive of vitamin B1 than carefully controlled irradiation is
E. for food that is both irradiated and cooked, the reduction of vitamin B1 associated with either process individually is compounded[E]
支持E的:
I chose C before but now I lean towards E. The reason for choosing E is: either (irrelevant) the irradiated food is eaten raw or (misleading) when both cooked and irradiated, the loss of VB1 is doubled. The two are side by side (either just irradiated or both) and flows well.
c不存在i存在(生吃i过的),i单独作用,c就无关,比较i,c是beside the point。
1.no worse than不是not worse than, 这里可以把no worse than理解为as great as,as much as,as significant as。 就是说irradiation和cooking在这一点上差不多,可能i>c or i<c,并不是i>=c(i not worse than c).
Yaoyao: X1 = food that is irradiated but NOT cooked
X2 = food that is irradiated but cooked
Y1 = cooked food that is NOT irradiated
Y2 = cooked food that IS irradiated

X1 + X2 = irradiated food
Y1 + Y2 = cooked food

To evaluate the difference between cooking and irradiating food, the
argument compares the loss of vitamin in X1 + X2 = the loss of vitamin
in Y1 + Y2, where it should really be comparing X1 and Y1.

E basically says because X2 and Y2 combines the reduction of irradiation and cooking, the conclusion is misleading.
支持C的:
1。为何说beside the point: 因为对于 irradiated food that is eaten raw。
但因为cooking对 irradiated food that is NOT eaten raw是必须的,而irradiation只是保鲜,不是必需的,可有可无。
GWD-5-Q32:
Which of the following most logically completes the argument?

GWD-5-Q19: Boldface
Historian: In the Drindian Empire, censuses were conducted annually to determine the population of each village. Village census records for the last half of the 1600’s are remarkably complete. This very completeness makes one point stand out; in five different years, villages overwhelmingly reported significant population declines. Tellingly, each of those five years immediately followed an increase in a certain Drindian tax. 证据 This tax, which was assessed on villages, was computed by the central government using the annual census figures. Obviously, whenever the tax went up, villages had an especially powerful economic incentive to minimize the number of people they recorded; and concealing the size of a village’s population from government census takers would have been easy. 推断Therefore, it is reasonable to think that the reported declines did not happen.

In the historian’s argument, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first supplies a context for the historian’s argument; the second acknowledges a consideration that has been used to argue against the position the historian seeks to establish.
B. The first presents evidence to support the position that the historian seeks to establish; the second acknowledges a consideration that has been used to argue against that position.
C. The first provides a context for certain evidence that supports the position that the historian seeks to establish; the second is that position.
D. The first is a position for which the historian argues; the second is an assumption that serves as the basis of that argument.
E. The first is an assumption that the historian explicitly makes in arguing for a certain position; the second acknowledges a consideration that calls that assumption into question.[C]

Monkeys/snake

Monkeys that are reared away from the natural environment can learn cues from its wild counterparts. After being shown images of wild monkeys reacting to hazardous situations ie. a snake, they too show similar behaviors when presented such stimulus. However, when shown images that has been digitally manipulated to show such reactions in harmless situations, the tamed monkeys do not display/mirror similar reactions. This could be possibly something innate that cues the monkey which situation is actually dangerous.

What can one assume reading the passage.

a) Genetic predisposition of the monkeys
b) The images are poor quality and thus difficult to learn from
c) They will mirror the behavior in the digitally manipulated images of another harmless stimulus.
I chose A

Protein diet and height

It is found that protein is necessary for height in humans, a lengthy period without result in stunted stature. Archaeologist found in the Blah blah blah area that the remains from cemetery are reduced, therefore the humanoids are short. Hence it is most likely that the village did not consume meat on a regular basis.

What is the most likely to support this statement

a) The village elders and nobles have a higher intake of proteins
b) The village eats as much proteins as other sources of nutrients
c) There is a severe shortage in the village for an extended period of time
d) XXX inputs please?

Calcium absorbion in milk=heart disease
Milk is found to have a positive effect on reducing a Blah blah blah heart disease. However, it must not be from the calcium in the milk. As people on calcium pills do not show the same results and percentages of heart disease remains the same. The causant must be some other substrate within the milk.

What must be true for the passage above?
a) There is other substrates in milk that cause the effect of reducing diseases
b) All the substrates in milk cannot be specified
c) The calcium intake needs to be high concentration
d) XXX inputs please?

Tradewind and pollen/flora variety
There is certain relation in plants for locations that shares the same trade wind passage. The amount of flora variety on a Blah blah blah island is XXX amount similar to another island which is XXX miles away. However the XXX amount is acutally less for a XXX shorter distance away, but shares different wind passage.

All the below can assist with the statement except for one.
a) Whether or not the flora on the same tradewind passage are same strain
b) Whether the soil and environment is suitable for the growth of flora in interest
c) What the local animals and birds of the two islands are.
d) XXX inputs please?
