既然是PROPOSE一個CONCEPT，這個CONCEPT就只是一個CONCEPT，哪需要用到HAD + PP.(強調過去的過去)。
這提純粹是文法概念，跟修辭無關，除非他要考你IN WHICH 還是WHEN比較好！

不好意思,我的想法是這樣,題目如果用的是過去完成式,代表這個冰河存再於過去地"一段時間",這段時間比CONCEPT提出的時間還要早,所以我覺得過去完成式好像也可以?有人可以告訴我這樣想是錯在哪裡嗎?

我剛剛才想通為什麼過去完成式不好:

LA 於1837年提出一個觀念，表示該處曾存在冰原，而且該處當時(即1837年)的溫度已有所不同；所以，如果用過去完成式的話，表示直到1837年為止，該處應該還存在冰原才對，不過因為氣候已經不同了，我相信當時該處應該不會有冰原才對，所以用過去式才比較合理

==> 改成 when great ice sheets existed where there are temperate areas now? 有這種說法嗎? 總覺得怪怪的 :P

還是不如B或是修改後的E來的簡潔.

(C) 的 now 雙向修飾,正確位置應該是 ...there were now temperate areas
(E) 的 now 修飾到 when 子句,正確位置應該是 ...in areas that are now temperate
=> 形容詞用關代表示,不簡潔,應該寫成 in now temperate areas. 但是這樣 now 沒有時態,最後就改成 (A) 的樣子.

補充：剛剛在CD上看到一個說法還不錯：

→过去完成时就一招，原文里要有个过去时间点明确动作是在这个时间点前完成的

再補充：CD上已經有人解答what的問題。 what = in places where

1.what are now the -->可把它視為慣用語法,如此類的有,what i am now/today ,what it worse/better,what we call,what with A and what with B..etc.
2.為什麼過去簡單式?-->我覺得這裡有一點過去和現在對比的感覺,past <-->what are now,所以用過去簡單式會比較簡潔並且合邏輯

請問為會unclear?是因為前面講時間,後面講地點要用不同的關代修飾嗎?(ie when表過去冰河時期而不是area?)

(B)"existed in what are now temperate areas" vs.(D) "existed in current temperate areas"
前者明确说明此areas与彼areas的差别——地域同，时间状态不同，后者造成了混淆甚至是时间上的逻辑错误.这才是本题BD抉择的排错处。

(D)is unclear
existed in current temperate areas感覺好像過去的東西存在於現在的地方，時間不合邏輯(過去的東西存在於過去的地方才對)
應該說過去的東西存在一個地方，而這個地方現在是temperat 如同(B)existed in what are now temperate areas
