Q12:
Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years, excepting for the domains of administration and teaching, the English language was never really spoken on the island.

A. excepting for
B. except in
C. but except in
D. but excepting for
E. with the exception of

Ans: C
(A) (D) excepting (廢字, = except for)不選

(C) Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years, but {except in the domains of administration and teaching, the English language was never really spoken on the island}.
i.e. but 連接兩句, except 是介係詞? except in : prep + prep?

(B) except
Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years, except {in the domains of administration and teaching, the English language was never really spoken on the island}.

Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years
第二句the English language was never really spoken on the island

正確答案C, but當連接詞, except當介係詞, 在什麼領域用in/within the domain
=>Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years, but the English language was never really spoken on the island except in the domains of administration and teaching.

(B) 如果 except 當連接詞 (= unless) 似乎句意蠻不合理: ..., unless the English language was never really spoken...

from Merriam-Webster,
except
[conjunction]
: on any other condition than that : UNLESS <except you repent>
[preposition]
: with the exclusion or exception of <daily except Sundays>
[transitive verb]
: to take or leave out from a number or a whole : EXCLUDE
[intransitive verb ]
: to take exception : OBJECT
