個人建議看的懂的話，就不要挑代名詞的毛病，不然這樣寫文章大家不是累死(死命的自己一直唸說不要指代不清，然後重複名詞N次)。

because of 是介係詞片語可以當副詞來修飾動詞(在本題應該是修飾there are fewer.....)

我的想法：
(B) (D) "making them..." 修飾對象不清。
一般出現Ving 修飾對象通常是作為前置N.之 modifier 或是前面整句話的動作（如OG11 Q43, OG11 Q71），但此處顯然無法如此解釋。排除。
(D) 之比較(many more times...)有誤

(C) which 應指代名詞（而緊鄰於前者並非N.，已經是錯誤選項的徵兆了），則根據就近指代原則，其修飾對象為 researchers，邏輯不通。何況(C)的比較表達有誤(more ... compared to)

如此則剩下選項(A)(E)，考慮其表達倍數方式均可，此兩者主要差別在引導"原因"之介詞片語之位置不同。由句意邏輯判斷，此原因是修飾"there are fewer than ..." 而不是修飾 "researchers have determined taat..."，故排除(A)而選(E)。
