thanks jimmy,

glad to find you're enjoying haas and hopefully also tilden park. i haven't made my final decision regarding mba. i'm doing fine without it, but it's a tempting idea to take a long break in silicon valley with a mba as side product and maintaining my vc/industry network at the same time.

wish you best luck with your mba/career endeavors.

Venture \$m[1]:to whoopsnow,

this can be a "why mba" question, and the answer varies for different individuals.

according to the brochures, a mba is supposedly to make you a "business leader" or at least "manager", right? however, based on my own bulge bracket i-bank experience, i believe that i-banking (consulting not much better) really has little to do with "management". i-bankers and consultants are referred as "professionals", not "managers". they are safe plays and can actually be a fast track to management positions, but there's no guarantee and not everyone fits into these sectors.

the peer pressure also varies in different schools. wharton/chicago/columbia are quite finance/consulting obsessed, but a number of people in stanford/berkeley would prefer high-tech company/start-up to financial jobs. a google project manager doesn't sound worse and make less than a morgan stanley associate.

personally, i'd rather to run a successul company with bankers/consultants working for me rather than to be a consultant/banker (don't hate me, i-bankers and consultants. i think these are great professions, but i don't enjoy it that much). as for you, i hope a mba enables you to control your life, not to be controlled by flavor-of-month type of jobs.

my advice: be yourself and pursue your dream. f**k the noises.

venture,

I appreciate your detailed advice. I do have a very clear goal of what to do after mba, but I have to admit that after months of contacts with other mba applicants/students/alumni i start to realize that my background and career goal do not seem even close to most of theirs. this more or less influenced my perception of an mba education. at the same time, while all the schools i applied to claim they welcome students with DIVERSE backgrounds and goals, the many rejections from them hit me like crazy in the past couple of weeks. that's why the doubt.

i didn't have any knowledge of "i-banking", "VC", and "PE", nor have I heard of "Technology Management" (which sounds REALLY nice) though, i understand that the only school that accepts me understands MY need, and more important, that i can learn what's necessary TO ME in this school. though they are not top15, i thank them greatly for giving me the chance, and $$ :PP .

and i thank you venture for taking the time answering my question. i asked a question to which I knew the answer long time ago but lost confidence in day after day. Your confirmation means a lot to me. thanks man!! ;yes; ;yes; ;yes;

IT, or Financial M, SCM, RD, HR and so on.

Make every endeavor to achieve the goal you are dying for.
