我在想這邊的as應該就是"當...的時候"的意思
所以"as canals and eventually railroads reached into the region"
不算在第二句的主要子句 (所以不要用and as來想)
(而算是時間副詞子句??之類,我每次都不會這種專有名詞)

所以如果我們把所有關於時間的子句或片語之類(我不會確切說法)拿掉
然後看and的平衡
就會變成
anthracite coalfields opened in eastern Pennsylvania, and substantial supplies of coal were exported to the nation’s growing mills, forges, factories, and railways.

我有一個小小的建議喔
就是我建議不要用"there是虛字"來判斷對錯
有時候there用起來真的不順,可是不要看到there就狂刪啊

就不應該要選there is were 之類的 abc　ｔｈｅｒｅ　ｉｓ表已經存在～而非該原因所生的　翻譯就會變成　開通鐵路　發現有足夠的煤運到全國！～這是我小小的領悟拉～～有錯請牛人們指教～
ｂｔｗ，ｄ．ｅ中　因果表達明顯的是ｅ！

因為這些句子永遠可以變為 N + 主動或是被動的V. 符合簡潔原則.

不過, 題目中如果是there be N(s) 沒有修飾語, 就要納入考慮的答案中.

what's the thing to parallel with?

看了一些CD NN的總結以及做題總結發現 There be N+doing/which do…./that do…錯誤標誌，there be N(s) 沒有修飾語－不能立刻刪除要保留因可能正確﹗
希望可以幫到大家﹗

We prefer "as" to say that when one thing changes, another thing changes at the same time

ex: As the cheese matures, its flavour improves. (rather than when the chesse matures......)
