Do B schools like Startup people?

文章Wutang » 2008-10-23 15:13

This is probably a dumb question for the most of you, but I just feel that I should ask for my own good.

thanks

Hi, Wutang, long time
it should be why does startup people need and want an MBA
b-schools like people who can match the study with where they're going, or at least a general direction
while in such a short 2-year study, how and why do entrepreneurs need an MBA
need which parts, and from which particular school

To address your question directly, the answer is YES. Startup people uaually have qualities and experiences which B-schools are looking forward, and the questions then become how you can impress the B-schools by showing yourself. In short, you need to know clearly what B-school want, who you are, and what you need.

I think you can check school ranking of entrepreneurship and my school "Babson College" definitely like startup people.

I'd say it depends:

--If you are an international student (as in undergrad overseas) and you've done start-up only professionally, it's difficult for schools to "benchmark" the quality of your experience.

--If you are looking to work in a professional/corporate setting post-MBA, having just start-up experience won't help you and could work against you.

I am actually not planning to go back to school any time soon. However, this would be an option for me as long as I see merits in attending B school. My vision is to start a company to make the same impacts that google are making to our society. It would be difficult to achieve this feat with the resources and networking available to me right now. The idea of attending a B school is to learn new things, gather more resources (funding?) and networking (the right people to connect to), and then I can launch my own startup. I thought by attending one of the M7 schools like Harvard might make my vision to become reality. I would want to go back to Taiwan to contribute if I can, because I want to make things happen there. It's still a long way to go, but I have already chose this path so there are no regrets.

thank you very much

best,
James

If you look at companies like Google, Yahoo, eBay, etc, they were not started by MBAs

As an entrepreneur, I think what you need most is guts. You don't need a degree.

MBA cannot teach you courage or vision.
