下文是native speaker專門用gre的big words寫的，有點像松松的黃寶書的味道，句子寫得不錯，很值得一看。不好讀，要有耐心去查出你不會的字。每天都讀上一次，久了就是你的。可惜只找到這一篇，希望以後可以多找到幾篇。中文的部分是我翻譯的(大意)。

Google裏有個很好用的功能，就是它的圖檔搜尋功能，利用這種功能

可以幫我們記憶單字。例如搜尋 arrogance (傲慢)，就看到畫面上出

現好多歐巴馬的圖片(特別是仰角45度那張)，看圖說話，立即讓人印

象深刻。不過圖片很多，有時無法一下子就找到想要的圖片，要花點功夫。

例如，click Google搜尋畫面上的「圖片」功能，馬上就出現一個空欄，打

入recalcitrant搜尋，就看到一堆圖片，找了一下，看到11頁有個臉上非常

不爽的女人，旁邊還站著兩位男士的照片(看內文說明應是澳洲的政治人物)

，與recalcitrant的字義頗切合。

與gre單字的奮鬥是個辛苦的過程，請一直以來支持本專欄的朋友，不要忘

細說Gratuitous：

Gratuitous is derived from the Latin gratuitus, meaning "not paid for" or "extra, unprovoked."

Think of the word gratuity, which means "a tip" or "something extra" for services rendered.

Gratuitous is a great way of describing something free or given freely.

Gratuitous can have a more negative sense when used to describe something unwarranted, like a "gratuitous insult."

Gratuitous is also a great word to describe adding something extra that is really unnecessary:
"The gratuitous nudity in the movie did not contribute to the plot, but was added to attract teenage boys to the film."

In this sense, gratuitous is a more sophisticated way of saying unnecessary.

附上上文的翻譯(我翻的)供大家參考。

Gratuitous來自的拉丁gratuitus，意思是“不支付”或“額外的，無緣無故的”。

jocose, jocular, jocund, jovial, jolly這些字差別在那裏，你曾經想過嗎？

在這個網址(http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=244049)有人討論了這幾個字的用法。

以下這個美國人的觀點，得到許多人的贊同：
I honestly have never used the word "jocose" used outside of a dictionary reading and the word
"jocular" only rarely in speech, so that might give you a clue as to its frequency of use.

Jovial and jolly are slightly more used, but not by much. Jolly is a bit of an antiquated phrase and
you would only use it to refer to a Santa Claus-type figure who is always good-spirited. It can also
be used derogatively for an overweight person, but only in the right context.

I personally only really use "jovial" when referring to someone's manner. I will say, "He has a certain
jovial manner about him," also meaning good-spirited and fun (though not necessarily funny!).

細說Galvanize---來自青蛙腿的啟示

　　十八世紀義大利波洛尼亞大學的解剖學暨電流學家Luigi Galvani賈法尼

(Luigi Galvani 1737-1798)經常利用「電流刺激」生物，觀察它們的反應，

1780年他秋天無意間發現，即使沒通電源的情況下，剝下來的青蛙腿也會

發生痙攣的現象，後來經過十年的研究，在1791年發表成果。他一直認為

這是一種由動物本身的生理現象所產生的電，稱為動物電(但好朋友物理學

家伏特，並不同意他的看法)，因此開發了一支新的科學「電生理學」的研究

。伏特和賈法尼對電流本質的爭辯同時也帶動了電流研究的開始，促使近代

電池的發明。後世將所有和電流、電位相關的單字都冠上galvani-或galvan-

( 如，galvanism直流電，galvanizer電鍍工，galvanization鍍鋅/通電/激起) 。

Galvanize本意是指用電流刺激肌肉(就是Luigi Galvani常常幹的那件事)，

現在這個詞除了它的原始意義外，還被更廣泛使用在刺激某人或某團體，

讓他們採取行動(另外一義是「鍍鋅」)。

Gamut的etymology

Gamut這個字，它真正的來源是古希臘和中世紀，由Gamma和Ut兩個字組合而成。

中世紀時期的音階系統，主要以人聲的音域為主，並不像今天的器樂曲那樣寬廣。

樂譜中音階的最低音以希臘文字母Gamma標示，唱時則唱成Ut（相當於今日的Do，見下說明）

，因此音階中最低音也稱為Gamma Ut，簡稱為Gamut。這個字的意義後來也被擴

大作「樂理上的全音階或全音域」，引申為全部、整個範圍之意。例如色彩全域

（由電腦或輸出裝置所能顯示的全部色彩所組成）。

十一世紀，義大利Arezzo城有一位本篤會修士叫Guido，是當時一位著

名的音樂理論家，他最大的貢獻之一，是發明了四線譜記譜法。在Guido之前

，歐洲用的是紐姆(Neumatic)記譜法，顧名思義，現實中的紐姆記譜法就是扭

來扭去的線，標在唱詞上方，提示唱者大概音高。這樣的方法沒有辦法準確記

譜，只能提示唱者回憶起熟悉的樂譜。Guido發明了四線譜後，進而將音階命

名為：Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, SOL, La，Si。

這幾個名字是來自一首獻給Saint John的拉丁讚美詩的第一節：

Ut queant laxis-> Ut=Do

resonare fibris,-> Re

Mira gestorum-> Mi

famuli tuorum,-> Fa

Solve polluti ->SOL

labii reatum, ->La

Sancte Ioannes.-> Si

後來ut換成do，最後兩個詞Sante Iohannes各取首字母拼成si(Si)，這訧是

do re mi fa so la si的來歷。這些音節在教學中一直沿用至今，只是“ut”被

換成了“do”。但是法國仍在用“ut”,且之後又在“la”之上加了一個“ti”

(在《sound of Music真善美》裡的Do Re Mi那首歌我們可以清楚聽到唱者將

“si”唱成“ti”，可能是為了避免Sol和Si都是以S開始的唱名。但在義大利和法國仍用“si”)。

唱歌學常用英文不難，可是要唱歌學gre單字，那就稍有困難了，因為適當的

歌不好找。有的lyrics裏含有gre單字，可是melody並非人人都愛；有些melody

好，但是lyrics裏卻少有gre單字。當然，這可能與我知道的英文歌曲少有關，

如果各位網友有適當的歌，請一定要上來告訴大家，讓大家享受唱歌的快樂時

細說malapropism -> 對背單字非常有幫助

源自Richard Brinsley Sheridan的劇作--愛爾蘭喜劇Rivals《情敵》中的人物Mrs. Malaprop
馬勒普太太，常誤用詞語引發好笑的結果。比如︰
"the pineapple of politeness", instead of "the pinnacle of politeness"
他正是禮貌的菠蘿"(原本應該是"他正是禮貌的最高點")；

"contagious countries"(具有傳染性的國家) for "contiguous countries" (相鄰的國家);
"allegory" instead of "alligator,"
"illiterate him from your memory" instead of "obliterate from your memory."

很顯然的，Mrs. Malaprop常把兩個長得像的字搞混了，才會鬧出笑話。

Richard Brinsley Sheridan創造Mrs. Malaprop時，必然參考了法語的mal à propos，
該字來到英文後，變成malapropos，不合時宜的，形容詞。

記法：
Malapropos->mal (not)+ proper->不合時宜的

細說Entrench(也作intrench)

字源：from en- (1) "make, put in" + trench(=ditch, cut). Related: Entrenched; entrenching.

主要有三個意義：
