Let's take a look at Darden's essay questions to see where you could work a mention of your career progress:
1. Write your life story in one page or less.
This is certainly a tall order, and it's easy to be overwhelmed by the task at hand and forget your audience and the information you need to convey. While it would certainly make sense to include some comment on your family background and years preceding your college career, a good portion of this essay should be devoted to your outside interests and professional experience, since these are the things that are really of interest to the adcom (ideally, your previous experiences should establish the foundation for your current interests and more recent endeavors).
2. Why do you want to earn an MBA? In an ideal scenario, what would you be doing in fifteen years?
It would make sense to preface a discussion of your goals and reasons for pursuing an MBA with some information about the professional experiences that have brought you to this point in your path. Because the length of this and the following responses is left to your discretion, you should easily be able to incorporate some discussion of the points that you would be using an optional essay to cover.
3. What is your understanding of how Darden is different from the other schools to which you are applying? Why do you feel Darden is a good fit for you?
This would be a good place to incorporate some mentions of your outside activities (by way of comments about future participation in related campus clubs), and to comment on the ways that your professional experiences to date would enable you to lend valuable insight to some specific courses.
4. Describe your most rewarding leadership experience and what it means to your development as a potential leader.
The natural thing to do here would be to present a detailed account of your most impressive professional experience in a leadership role. If you are concerned about commenting about your career progression as a whole, you could write about the way you drew on your previous positions and projects in this one instance, and also discuss the ways the lessons you learned have served you in your work since the situation in question.
As you can see, if you are careful about your topic selection, you should be able to cover your career to date in sufficient detail in the required essays. While Darden might not take as firm a stance as some other schools on the use of the optional essay only for extenuating circumstances, you should keep in mind that in answering this, you are creating extra work for the person reviewing your profile. As such, you should make sure that you make it worth his or her while by presenting some new interesting detail of your background that you could not have introduced into your application otherwise.
